FALCONER – Layers of snow proved to be too much for the roof of a building in Falconer on Friday morning.
At approximately 8:40 a.m., the roof of a large building on East Everett St. collapsed most likely due to the weight of the recent snowfall, according to Falconer Fire Chief Charlie Piazza. Piazza said workers at Burger King on E. Main Street saw the roof of the building collapse from across the street.
“Probably from the weight of the snow,” he said. “It’s actually an unoccupied building at this time. We’re waiting on code enforcement from the village to get here and they’ll make a determination if the back section of the building will have to be torn off today, or what procedures they’ll have to do.”
Piazza said the building used to be the old Falconer Agway.
Collapse can occur during this time of the year due to the accumulation of snow, he said.
“It’s just kind of the weight of the roof and the old buildings, some of them are unstructurally sound,” Piazza said. “Some of them they can’t access the weight.”
He advised the public to avoid using Everett Street for the remaining of the day.
