City Man Jailed After Drugs, Money Seized Wednesday

Alfredo R. Diaz

A Jamestown man was jailed this week after several searches turned up more than 100 grams of fentanyl likely to have been sold “within a couple days” along with tens of thousands of dollars.

Police took 57-year-old Alfredo R. Diaz into custody following a traffic stop Wednesday around 3:20 p.m. in the area of North Main Street at West Oak Hill Road. The stop was the result of an investigation into the sales and trafficking of narcotics in the Jamestown area, police said in a news release.

The vehicle, being driven by Diaz, reportedly contained 100.6 grams of fentanyl and a “quantity of cash.” A second search took place at 741 E. Second St., which resulted in the seizure of more fentanyl, prescription medication and $8,000 in cash.

A third search occurred at a Livingston Avenue storage facility, where a 2016 Cadillac SRX SUV was located. The vehicle yielded $44,000 in money and 49 suboxone strips.

In all, the wide-ranging investigation — which included Jamestown Metro Drug Task Force, Southern Tier Regional Drug Task Force and the New York State Police — required the execution of four separate search warrants.

“This quantity of fentanyl is significant given its high potency and connection to fatal overdoses,” said Capt. Robert Samuelson of the Jamestown Police Department. “Given that only 2 to 3 milligrams can be fatal, this is very significant given the quantity recovered. We believe these drugs would likely have been sold here in Jamestown within a couple days.

“The amount of cash is also significant and it also shows how lucrative this has been for Alfredo Diaz. As a result, both of his vehicles — a 2009 Hyundai and the 2016 Cadillac — along with the $52,000 are all being seized and are subject to federal asset forfeiture.”

Diaz is being held on three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and two counts of fifth-degree criminal possession. He is facing additional charges as officers were assisted by special agents from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

“We as a task force will continue to aggressively pursue drug dealers in the Jamestown and Chautauqua County area utilizing our partnerships with participating agencies, which includes assistance from federal law enforcement,” Samuelson told The Post-Journal.

The city man was previously named in a large drug sweep in 2014 known as “Operation Horseback” involving the trafficking of heroin. The sweep involved more than 120 law enforcement officers, ranging from agents of the Attorney General’s Office, the New York State Police Department, the Jamestown Police Department, the Department of Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Border Patrol.

Raids were conducted in both Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties as well as other parts of New York state. In the end, 45 out of 47 individuals named in a 159-count indictment were taken into custody, from low- to mid-level dealers to drug users charged for their association with the pipelines.

The 2014 case is not related to Wednesday’s arrest.
