Chautauqua Lake Comes From Behind, Tops Forestville 7-3
MAYVILLE — Despite having just four hits in the game, Chautauqua Lake came from behind to beat Forestville 7-3 in a matchup of defending Section VI softball champions Friday.
The Hornets — defending Class D champions — led 2-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning before the Eagles — last year’s Class C title winners — scored two runs to take a 3-2 lead. After Forestville (1-1) tied it back up at 3-all in the top of the sixth, Chautauqua Lake (2-0) scored the final four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The Eagles’ Cameron Mackey reached on an error to start the bottom of the fifth before Jillian Miller and Macy Ulsh drew back-to-back one-out walks to load the bases. Then, with two outs, Lucy Gates hit a two-run double to center field to make it 3-2.
In the top of the sixth, the Hornets tied the game when Alexandra Kerstetter hit a one-out double and later scored on an error.
But Chautauqua Lake put the game away with four runs in their half of the frame, all of the runs coming with two outs. Karagan Fairbank walked with one out and Mackey reached on an error that left Fairbank at third. After a flyout, Miller hit an RBI single to center field and Ulsh followed with a two-run double to center field.
Emily Lillie had an inside-the-park home run in the third inning to give Forestville a 2-1 lead. Elizabeth Case and Kerstetter each finished with two outs while Madison Christian added a double. Kerstetter walked five and struck out four in the circle for the Hornets.
Alexis Szumigala tossed a complete game, striking out two and walking one for the Eagles.
WOLFPACK WINS FIRST GAME
CLYMER — Coming together for the first time, Clymer/Sherman/Panama defeated Westfield 11-2 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 action.
Elli Bodamer shined at the plate and in the circle for the Wolfpack (1-0, 1-0), going 4 for 4 with three RBIs while giving up just two hits and two unearned runs with 12 strikeouts in the circle.
Kiera Loberg connected for a pair of doubles going 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and both Jessica Lyon and Tayler Pinzok provided one double apiece.
Westfield (0-2, 0-2) received singles from Arielle Corbett and Madison Burgess, while Avery Smith struck out five batters in the circle.
MAPLE GROVE TOPS BULLDOGS
BROCTON — Savannah Weart went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and Maple Grove defeated Brocton 15-1 in nonleague action.
Maple Grove (1-2) received a strong performance from Meg Ryan, going 4 for 5 with a double and two RBIs. Bry Cornell doubled and added two RBIs while Dani Trim went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Ryan earned the win in the circle and struck out six batters.
Brocton (1-2) was led by Miyah Collins going 2 for 3 with a double; Maria Daugherty added an RBI single; and Sha’Nah Adams and Zoe Spiller each had a single. Nevaeh Hebner recorded two strikeouts in the circle.
HUSKIES UPEND SOUTHWESTERN
Tiana Maine struck out 13 batters from the circle and added a double at the plate as Olean upended Southwestern 8-3 in Division 1 action.
Ari Finch went 1 for 2 with a double and Alaina Hirliman doubled with an RBI for the Huskies (3-2, 2-0).
Southwestern (2-4, 1-1) was led by Arianna Silakowski who hit 2 for 4, Addison Shaw walked twice and scored two runs and Madi Burnett knocked a double and tossed nine strikeouts from the circle.
HILLBILLIES OUST SALAMANCA
SALAMANCA — Anna Delcamp led Fredonia past Salamanca both offensively and defensively in a 12-1 Division 1 victory.
Delcamp provided three hits including a double at the plate for Fredonia (1-1, 1-1) and gave up just four hits from the circle with 10 strikeouts. McKenna Crawford added two hits including a triple, Jenna Fryberger had a triple and Delaney Artrip collected two hits.
Salamanca (2-3, 0-1) received doubles from Delaney Haley and Ella Martens, while Charli Ross dealt five strikeouts.
