Varsity Cheerleading Team OK’d In Frewsburg

FREWSBURG – A creation of a varsity football cheerleading team for the 2024-25 school received the approval Thursday of the Frewsburg Central School Board.

The board also approved the creation of a varsity football coaching position for the 2024-2025 school year as well.

Board members will approve the appointment of a coach at a future meeting.

At its February meeting the board heard a presentation by Emma Silverburg, to bring back high school cheerleading for the 2024-2025. Silverburg, who coached the elementary cheer team this school year said in February cheerleading would be a fall sport taking place August through November.

At the February meeting, Silverburg noted that the team would cheer at football games as well as travel to competitions.

The board also approved the creation of a director of pupil personnel services position. Currently Robert H. Jackson Elementary Principal Tami McKotch is serving in that role. The board also granted McKotch tenure as the elementary principal. McKotch holds a professional certification as a school district leader, and also holds a professional certification as a school building leader. Her tenure will begin March 19, the board noted.

In other business, prior to the regular board meeting, the second budget workshop was held. The proposed 2024-25 spending plan with a 2.28 percent tax levy is at $23,745,482. The 2023-2024 budget was at $22,458,160. The difference from last year’s budget is $1,287,322 or a 5.73 percent increase, O’Boyle said. The superintendent said to meet the tax levy cap, about $197,912 is needed in reductions.

Interim Superintendent Shelly O’Boyle said to balance the budget there are three choices: increase revenue, decrease expenditures or increase revenues and also decrease expenditures.

O’Boyle said that the New State Legislative budget is due by April 1; the board will approve its final budget April 11; the budget will be available to the public April 25; the budget hearing is May 9; and the budget vote is May 21.
