Scarpine Appointed JPS Arts, Humanities Coordinator

Christopher Scarpine

Christopher Scarpine has been appointed as the Jamestown Public Schools Coordinator of Arts and Humanities.

The Jamestown Public Schools Board of Education approved the appointment Tuesday. Scarpine will begin his position on July 1, and in his new role, Scarpine will oversee instructional practices and curriculum development for the art, music, social studies, and world language departments in the school district.

“We are pleased to welcome Christopher Scarpine as Coordinator of Arts and Humanities,” Tina Sandstrom, assistant superintendent for instruction and school improvement, told board members. “We are confident that his leadership experience will benefit our students and staff across the district.”

Scarpine has served as the Principal of Springville-Griffith Institute Elementary School for the last eight years. Scarpine began his career at Springville in 2005 as an elementary teacher and spent two years as an assistant principal at Lake Shore Middle School in Angola before returning to Springville as a principal in 2016. From 2006 to 2014, he also served as a policy board member for the Erie-Cattaraugus Teacher Center in Angola.

From 1993 to 2000, Scarpine served as a Hospital Corpsman and Orthopedic Technician for the United States Navy, serving in active duty from 1993 to 1997 and reserve duty from 1997 to 2000, when he received an honorable discharge. In 2007, he earned a master rating as a United States Coast Guard Captain. He has also received the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal from the United States navy in 1997, a Good Conduct Medal in 1997, and a National Defense Ribbon in 1993.

“After having served as a building level administrator for 11 years and as a building principal for the last eight years, I’m really looking forward to the opportunity Jamestown City Schools has offered me,” Scarpine said in a prepared statement. “Arts and humanities help students expand their worldview, and Jamestown has a long history and proud tradition of excellence in these four subject areas. I look forward to seeing the K-12 journey through the district lens and hope it will foster greater experiences for our K-12 students at Jamestown.”

A native of Mayville, Scarpine graduated from the University at Buffalo in 2003 with a bachelor’s in psychology and earned a master’s in elementary education from Medaille College in 2005. He received his school building and school district leadership certificates from SUNY Fredonia in 2012. His salary is $95,000.
