ELLERY — Longtime Ellery town councilman Craig Miller was recognized for his service by having a plaque placed in his honor at Ellery Town Park.

A dedication ceremony was held Saturday and was attended by various Ellery town officials, including Supervisor Arden Johnson. The plaque was placed at Pavilion No. 2.

“He served as my deputy for about 25 years,” Johnson said. “He served on various committees. He was on the highway committee, the cemetery committee and the park committee,”

Johnson said the recognition is well-deserved for Miller given his dedication to the town.

“Craig was a very conservative councilman. He always watched the dollar,” Johnson said. “He was an excellent councilman and he did a very good job for us. He always thought of the taxpayers when preparing budgets.”

Johnson knows what it takes to serve a community for an extended period of time, as he’s thought to be the longest-serving and oldest town supervisor in the state. He shared his thoughts on what allowed Miller to serve for so long.

“Well, dedication is what’s behind that,” Johnson said.

The plaque states: “Town of Ellery park pavilion dedicated to Craig Miller; 48 years as town councilman.”

In other Ellery business, Johnson gave an update on the project at the Ellery School on Fluvanna Avenue which is sought to be renovated into long and short-term apartments.

“There’s nothing going at the moment,” Johnson said. “We haven’t heard from anyone. I don’t know just what it’s going to be. As far as apartments, I would hope it would help the people of Ellery, but until we get more information, it’s hard to (say).”

In an April town board meeting, an Arrows Capital Group representative spoke about the project. Aside from some painting, the exterior of the building would remain the same, while the interior would be renovated into high end apartments.

At the same meeting, the special-use permit for Arrows Capital Group was approved given compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
