Paramedic Salaries, Funds Approved
MAYVILLE — Legislators on the Audit and Control Committee made quick work of Thursday’s agenda, supporting salaries for paramedics as part of the fly-car system and authorizing to keep lobbying services to gather federal funds for water projects.
Committee members unanimously supported a resolution to set salaries for senior paramedic and paramedic positions. The new titles will be assigned to staff the county’s new fly-car program for implementation sometime in 2017. The positions will perform primary emergency medical care and advanced life support for individuals who are in need of immediate attention.
The fly-car system, which was included in the 2017 budget, will look to assist commercial and volunteer services respond to a rise in 9-1-1 calls throughout Chautauqua County. The system will see three cars and a staff consisting of a senior paramedic, three full-time paramedics and six part-time paramedics.
The paramedic position would be set at a Grade 11 salary level, $16.88-$21.64 an hour, or $35,110-$45,011 per year. The senior paramedic would be set at a Grade 14 salary level, $18.66-$23.98, or $38,813-$49,878 per year.
Retaining professional services in order to gather federal funds for water projects also saw unanimous approval from the committee. The consultant firm, known as Nexus Government Relations, specializes in water resources, programming and federal projects. Dave McCoy, county watershed coordinator, said the firm is a key piece to bringing in federal funds for projects in the harbors of northern Chautauqua County.
“Last year we retained the firm from Washington, D.C., to advocate for federal project dollars for our harbors and potential projects on Chautauqua Lake,” McCoy said. “It was a six-month trial arrangement that cost $15,000. Due to the political system, it was stop-and-go this year.”
McCoy said they didn’t full expend the funds as a contract will be extended through the end of the year. A new agreement was established in 2017 for a total of $15,000. Legislator George Borrello, R-Irving, said it’s a good use of funds.
“We’re making some great progress in getting some significant projects funded,” he said.
Legislators also authorized a lease with the Chautauqua Tobacco Asset Securitization Corporation to occupy space at the Chautauqua County-Jamestown Airport for $10,000 a year. Incorporated by county officials in 2000, the corporation is tasked with securing the county’s share of revenues from the settlement arrangement rising from New York state’s litigation with tobacco manufacturers. The corporation is required to hold a headquarters per the agreement.
Distribution of mortgage taxes to municipalities and increasing the legislature clerk’s salary and work hours also garnered legislators’ approval. Over $500,000 will be distributed to towns, $109,000 to the cities of Dunkirk and Jamestown and $78,850 to the villages. The clerk’s salary will increase by $7,000 and work time will go from 35 hours to 40 hours to perform additional duties as required by the legislature.
All resolutions will go before the full County Legislature at next week’s meeting.
