Digital Danger: Falconer Central School To Host Internet Safety Presentation
FALCONER – In the age of SnapChat, Facebook and Twitter, parents have even more to be wary of when it comes to the Internet and their children.
Aiding in the fight, Falconer Central School is hosting a free NetSmartz presentation for parents of children in the district tonight discussing the risks of youth utilizing the Internet and social media, tips on keeping children safe online and resources for online safety and reporting.
Titled “Protecting Children and Teens Online,” the presentation is a program by the National Center For Missing and Exploited Children, which is geared toward helping children stay safe while using the Internet.
David Holt, school social worker, said the event should be beneficial to parents, especially with their guest speaker, Renee DeLuke.
“Renee DeLuke is a community educator for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children,” Holt said. “During the day, she will be speaking to students in the district in a developmentally appropriate way with how to be responsible online.”
He added that the event in the evening is geared toward parents with children of all ages.
“She will be speaking to parents of kindergarteners though seniors,” Holt said. “She will be putting together a package of helpful information, a PowerPoint presentation and personal stories to make parents aware of the issues people face in a world where everything can be accessed at a click of a mouse or push of a button.”
Internet safety is nothing to take lightly, Holt said, as more and more children are using the internet in this day and age.
“She will be at all the schools today, and will give helpful tips for online safety,” he said, adding that he hopes the program will grow in future years. “We are starting it with just Falconer parents for now, but then I would like to develop it for the community as technology develops. Our goal would be to expand it to something we do annually.”
According to a 2015 report by Pew Research Center, 92 percent of teens utilize the Internet daily, while up to 24 percent report being on the Internet “constantly.”
The report also said that 71 percent of teens use more than one social media application.
DeLuke’s presentation will be held in the high school auditorium from 6-7 p.m. tonight for parents of kindergarten through 12th-grade students in the Falconer Central School District. For more information on NetSmartz, visit www.netsmartz.org/parents.
