LAKEWOOD — An investigation into the robbery of a Lakewood bank in which a man dressed as an elderly woman forced employees at gunpoint to move into the bank’s vault before fleeing with cash remains ongoing a year later.

The robbery of the Five Star Bank on Feb. 1, 2019, is still very much on the radar of the Lakewood-Busti Police Department. Chief John Bentley said investigators are looking for additional evidence that could potentially lead to an arrest.

“We’re still actively investigating,” Bentley told The Post-Journal this week. “We did come up with some things that could lead to the perpetrator, but we need to get a little more physical evidence to complete the process. But there’s nothing new that would allow us the ability to identify at this time.”

The robbery itself was somewhat rare for the area, Bentley said. A 6-foot-tall man dressed as an elderly woman in heavy clothing entered the East Fairmount Avenue branch that Friday around 4 p.m. The man walked up to the counter brandishing a black semi-automatic pistol and stated he had a bomb strapped to his body.

Bentley said the suspect, wearing a hat and using a cane, ordered all employees of the bank into the vault and left with an undisclosed amount of money.
