ARKWRIGHT — A 42-year-old woman was burned under unknown circumstances near the Arkwright Hills Campground on Thursday. The woman was transported to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo for treatment of third degree burns that covered more than 70 percent of her body.

Chautauqua County Sheriff Jim Quattrone said the cause of fire is unknown and that an investigation is ongoing. He said that when first responders arrived on scene at approximately 7:30 a.m., the fire had already been put out. First responders are interviewing possible witnesses for more information.

The incident occurred at 2942 Route 83 in Arkwright. An initial report received by the sheriff’s office suggested that the woman had set herself on fire, but there is yet to be any conclusive report confirming the cause of the incident.
