U.S. Rep. Tom Reed said he plans to retire the “Extreme Ithaca Liberal” tag he has used on many of his past Democratic opponents.

Reed, R-Corning, made the announcement during a call with regional media Wednesday, a day after he secured another term to the 23rd Congressional District.

Though a majority of his opponents have not resided in Ithaca, known for its liberal ideologies, Reed has used the “extreme” line in his last three general elections. Reed said he decided to retire the label after listening to his constituents.

The congressman — who won more than 53 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s general election — thanked his supporters and said he looked forward to “getting back on the saddle” in Washington.

“I want to thank the supporters and volunteers,” Reed said. “Without them, and without our friends fighting for us, we would not be a success. I humbly thank our supporters. We appreciate it.”

Reed also addressed his opponent in this year’s congressional race, Democrat Tracy Mitrano. “I wish her all the best for a great race,” he said. “I have respect for the work they put in and the race they conducted. I look forward to working with them going forward in the future.”

In a call with media Wednesday, Mitrano again attacked Reed for the negativity and mischaracterizations the congressman leveled against her in the general election. She said going forward, she hopes Reed can learn to work with Democrats in the House and listen to constituents who have alternative viewpoints from his own.

Reed said he looks forward to continuing his work on the Problem Solver Caucus.

With Democrats winning a majority of seats in the House, Reed said he hopes to get his voice heard for residents of the 23rd Congressional District. He also said he hopes congress doesn’t become “gridlocked” as it has in the past.
