WESTFIELD – The Northern Chautauqua Canine Rescue has been awarded a $500,000 Companion Animal Capital Projects Fund grant from the state Department of Agriculture and Markets to support construction of a new shelter.

NCCR is one of 12 organizations statewide selected to receive funding through the Companion Animal Capital Projects Fund. Competitive grants were awarded based on demonstrated need, detailed project descriptions, and the reasonableness of projected costs.

New York is investing nearly $10 million in animal shelters and rescue organizations across the state to upgrade aging facilities and strengthen care for dogs, cats, and other companion animals awaiting adoption.

“From cats and dogs to small animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, and more, pets are family,” said Gov. Kathy Hochul. “Many of these beloved companion animals start their journey at an animal shelter or humane society, so I’m proud to continue supporting these essential organizations through New York’s historic Companion Animal Capital Projects Fund. This funding awarded today is going to make a real difference, helping to better equip these vital facilities with the tools they need to keep our furry friends safe and well cared for as they wait to meet their new families.”

Since the program launched in 2017, New York has dedicated more than $48 million to the Companion Animal Capital Projects Fund, administered by the Department of Agriculture and Markets. To date, 150 projects have been awarded across the state. The funding helps offset the costs of projects such as renovating dog kennels, improving medical facilities, and building more efficient shelters that reduce long-term operating costs.

The $1.2 million capital project will support construction, renovation, and expansion work designed to enhance animal care, improve health and safety, and help ensure successful adoptions. NCCR is raising the remaining funds through its current capital campaign.

The new facility will better serve the dogs in NCCR’s care, as well as the staff and volunteers who support them every day. New state standards for animal shelters created new official requirements for any group that rescues dogs and cats, requiring better veterinary care, specific housing standards, and daily exercise. The law also provides specific guidelines regarding temperatures, noise levels, lighting, and ammonia levels, as well as how long an animal can be tethered or left outside.

The project brings the organization one step closer to creating a safe, updated space that meets current New York state regulations and provides dedicated areas for food preparation, grooming, meet-and-greets, and daily operations.
