JCC Students To Speak At Commencement

Jamestown Community College’s commencement ceremonies will feature student speakers from the Cattaraugus County and Jamestown campuses.

Nursing student Anna Gilbert of Olean will speak at the Cattaraugus County Campus ceremony, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, May 17, at the Olean YMCA. Morgan Tobio, a fine arts student from Hamden, Conn., will speak at the Jamestown ceremony, which will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, in the gymnasium of the Physical Education Complex on the Jamestown Campus.

Gilbert is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Academic Excellence. She is a tutor and Peer2Peer mentor at JCC, and received the Maureen Curry Inspirational Scholarship Award and the Phyllis Kraemer Memorial Nursing Scholarship in 2023. Gilbert has been hired by Jones Memorial Hospital to work as a registered nurse in the labor and delivery department after graduation while pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Nursing.

Since beginning her college career at JCC, Tobio has played a lead or primary role in the theater productions “Heathers,” “Romeo & Juliet,” “Something Rotten,” and “Hamlet.” Tobio earned this year’s Dan Gilhula Theater Arts Scholarship and the Robert Lee Scharmann Drama Scholarship. She also received the Scharmann scholarship last year and has submitted multiple works to the Juried Student Art Exhibition during her time at JCC. She is described as having unmatched creative abilities in painting and ceramics, as well as theater. Tobio intends to continue her studies and become an art teacher.
