First Lutheran Announces Christmas Eve Services

First Lutheran Church, 120 Chandler St., will have one combined morning worship service on Sunday, Dec. 24, at 10 a.m. in Memorial Chapel.

The service will observe Advent IV with a children’s pageant and the children’s bell choir performing.

First Lutheran Church will also have two festive Christmas Worship Services on Sunday with the contemporary service taking place at 4 p.m. and the traditional service at 9 p.m. preceded by a 30-minute vocal and instrumental musical prelude beginning at 8:30 p.m. The Rev. Mark E. Swanson, pastor, will preside at both worship services with a Christmas meditation.

The 4 p.m. contemporary service will be led by the Sacred Fire Praise Team, Kimberly King, worship leader and coordinator of contemporary worship. Gathering songs will be “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing,” and “Joy to the World” (Our God Saves). Special music will be “All the World Awaits” (Hosannah). The communion song is “Midnight Clear” (Love Song). The service will include a Christmas message by Swanson, Holy Communion, and the singing of “Silent Night” during the candle lighting ceremony. The service will be video recorded and available online via the Sacred Fire First Lutheran Jamestown Facebook page; First Lutheran Church Jamestown Facebook page; and on our church website www.flcjny.org.

The 8:30 p.m. instrumental/vocal pre-service music will include Gail Espinoza, pianist, performing “Good Christian All, Rejoice” by Joseph Martin; a vocal duet “Sing We All Noel” by Tom Fettke, sung by Kimberly and Peter Larson; Laura Carlson, flautist, will play “Three Carols in 6/8 time” arranged by Karen Smith and David Snyder; Marika Koch, soprano soloist, will sing “O Holy Night” by Adolphe Adam; Julie Livengood, pianist, and Brian Bogey, organist, will play the piano/organ duet “Joy to the World” arranged by Rex Koury; the Good News Hand Bell Ensemble directed by Karen Linn, will play “Breath of Heaven” by Amy Grant/arranged by Sandra Eithun; and Julie Costantini, soprano soloist, will sing “O Come to My Heart Lord Jesus” by Paul Ambrose.

The 9 p.m. Festival Worship Service with Holy Communion will feature congregational hymns and carols accompanied by organ and trumpeter, Glenn Utter. The congregational songs will include “Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful,” “Angels We Have Heard On High,” “Joy to the World,” “Once in Royal David’s City,” “On Christmas Night,” “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” “In the Bleak Midwinter,” and “Infant Holy, Infant Lowly.” “Silent Night” will be sung during the traditional candle lighting ceremony. The closing hymn will be “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing” followed by the organ postlude “Toccata on In Dulci Jubilo” by Page C. Long.

Choral anthems sung by the First Lutheran Choir will include “Hosianna” (Hosanna to the Son of David), by Vogler, sung in Swedish. The choir will also sing “Hurry, Hurry Yonder” by Davenport & Douglas Wagner; and “Gesu Bambino” by Pietro Yon, with Peter Larson as bass soloist. The Traditional Service will also be recorded on the First Lutheran Church Jamestown Facebook page and the church website www.flcjny.org. The public is cordially welcome to attend.

On Christmas Day, First Lutheran will also have a service in Memorial Chapel at 10 a.m. with Holy Communion and special music. The service will be led by Pastor Mark E. Swanson and the Rev. Laura A.
