Spring has sprung at C.V. Bush Elementary School where a school garden, made possible by a federal grant, is coming to life each day.

In partnership with the Jamestown Public Market, six more garden beds were installed in late April and the school’s robust Garden Club — made up of nearly 70 students and a dozen parent volunteers — began planting strawberries, carrots, potatoes, and lettuce in early May. The club planted garlic in the fall.

The supplies have been made possible through a Farm to School Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture. Fencing is expected to be added soon thanks to a donation from Carrie Wolfgang, longtime owner of the city-based bookstore “Novel Destination.”

The club also hosted a “Garden Festival” in mid-May that included face painting, a “pound” class, salsa-making, information tables from individuals at the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy, The Chautauqua Center, and the Jamestown Public Market.

“The response to our school garden has been incredible,” noted club advisors Amy Anderson and Annie Berg. “We are so grateful to the community for the continued support and to our friends at the Jamestown Public Market for their partnership and guidance.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
