Railroad Author To Speak To Historical Society

BEMUS POINT — The Bemus Point Historical Society’s next monthly presentation on Wednesday, June 8, at 7 p.m. will be “Southwestern New York State’s Trolly and Train Heritage” by rail author Ken Springirth.

The society is located at 13 Alburtus Ave., Bemus Point. The program will cover the history of the interurban trolley routes that once connected Jamestown to Westfield on both sides of Lake Chautauqua plus the Erie Railroad, New York Central Railroad, New York Chicago and St. Louis Railroad, and Pennsylvania Railroad which provided extensive freight service connections for Western New York industries to market their products throughout North America plus abundant passenger service. The region’s extensive railroad and trolley lines provided extensive community accessibility. In recent years, there has been growth in the number and quality of railroad and trolley systems in Western Europe and Asia. The program will cover the changes that have taken place in the railroad industry and the rebirth of the trolley car. A number of United States cities have reintroduced the trolley car. All of this will be covered in the presentation. There will also be an opportunity for questions.

Springirth is the author of 47 books on railroads and trolley car lines, including a children’s book “ABCs on the Rails.” The author has been researching and photographing rail lines for 62 years. His father was a streetcar motorman in Philadelphia, and his grandfather was a streetcar motorman in Washington, D.C. A native of Philadelphia, he commuted to Drexel Institute of Technology, now Drexel University, in Philadelphia by trolley car, subway, and sometimes commuter rail graduating in 1962.
