Jamestown Garden Club Members Gather For Presentation On Local Wines And Cheeses

Blaine Ballard, Mazza Vineyards brand ambassador, is pictured speaking to the Jamestown Garden Club.

Members of the Jamestown Garden Club gathered outside at the home of member Kristen Kreinheder.

Patti Idzik, club president, held the September business meeting on the Kreinheder’s back porch, which provided the socially distanced members with views of their grounds and Chautauqua Lake. The meeting was followed by a wine and cheese pairing that was hosted by members Allison Slater and Kristen Kreinheder.

Blaine Ballard, brand ambassador for Mazza, showcased products made by Mazza Vineyards and South Shore Wine Company located in North East, Pa., and Westfield. Cheeses were presented from Reverie Creamery, an artisan cheesemaking shop in Mayville. Ballard described the trends in the grape growing industry and how the terroir of Northwestern Pennsylvania and Southwestern New York are utilized for grape and wine businesses.

Pairings of wines from Mazza and South Shore Wine Company and cheeses from Reverie were served. The first pairing was the award-winning South Shore Gruner Veltliner served with the Reverie’s soft ripened Lavender Luna. Ballard followed that with the Mazza award-winning riesling served with Tom, the American Cheese Society winner from Reverie Creamery. The next pairing served included Reverie’s Wanderer, an alpine style cheese washed with Porter made by Big Inlet Brewing Company and Lemberger from Mazza’s South Shore Wine Company. A sparling pinot noir, from South Shore Wine Company, was served, paired with a creamy blue cheese. The capstone for the evening was pairing a chocolate truffle with South Shore’s Carmine, a dry red cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignane.

The Jamestown Garden Club members strive to stimulate an interest in gardening; to study native trees, plants and birds; and to work for their conservation and encourage civic planting. The Jamestown Garden Club is a member of The Federated Garden Clubs of New York, which is a member of National Garden Clubs Inc., the largest gardening organization in the world.
