County Vegetarian-Vegan Society To Meet This Week

The Chautauqua County Vegetarian-Vegan Society will meet on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. This month’s program features a Plant Walk and will take place at Greystone Nature Center, 8531 Bear Lake Road, Fredonia.

The meeting will be held rain or shine, so those coming should dress for the weather, which may be sunny, hot, rainy or cold.

Tiffany Jager of Dunkirk and Pasadena, Calif., will guide the short hike. She will point out identification of many plants. Jager has been giving presentations on wild plants in 4-H since fourth grade, and she has given nature walks at the Allegany Nature Pilgrimage. She is interested in all native and edible plants that some consider weeds. She is currently finishing up her degree in Computer Science at Caltech, one of the world’s top universities.

The group will meet at and tour the grounds at Greystone Nature Preserve. This consists of 71 rolling acres perched on the Portage Escarpment in Brocton.

The preserve offers a panoramic view of nearby Lake Erie and walking trails through a mixture of landscapes. Their mission is to present experiential environmental education as well as to plant and nurture native trees which will be sustained for hundreds of years. Directions can be found on their Facebook page.

The menu for the evening will be pot luck. Those attending are invited (but not required) to bring a nutritious dish to share which will serve eight to 10 people. All food should be vegan (no meat, eggs or dairy products), and, if possible, organic and locally grown. Those attending should also bring their own table service.

The cost of the dinner is $6 per person or $2 per person for those who bring a dish to share, with reduced rates for children. For more information, or to make a reservation, call Gail Erb at 753-7761 or Anne Watkins at 782-4334, or email annewatkins@juno.com.

All meetings are open to the public, especially to those who are interested in learning more about healthy eating and living. It is not necessary to be vegan or vegetarian to attend the meeting.

The Vegetarian Society is an information and support group for individuals seeking to explore healthy eating through vegetarian or vegan lifestyles. The group meets monthly for a vegan dinner. For more information, go to Facebook at Chautauqua-Vegetarian-Society.
