Goodell Sponsors Reading Challenge

In coordination with New York State Libraries, state Assemblyman Andrew Goodell, R-Jamestown, is sponsoring a Summer Reading Challenge to encourage students to read throughout the summer months.

Reading daily can open children’s minds to new adventures, goals and interests.

The Summer Reading Challenge requires children to read on their own or with someone else for at least 40 days throughout summer break. Forms are available at local schools and Goodell’s district office in the Fenton Building, 2 E. Second St., Suite 320, Jamestown. Parents must mark the enclosed calendar for each day in July and August that their child reads with them, someone else or on their own. Once at least 40 days has been marked off, return the completed form to Goodell’s office for the child to receive a New York State Excellence in Reading Certificate.

This year’s theme is “A Universe of Stories.” Area libraries are holding special events and contests. A list of book suggestions is also available at www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/summer/explore.htm.
