Poland Town Board Hears About Changes In Its Assessments

POLAND — The Poland Town Board recently held its monthly meeting.

County Legislator John Davis reported that he had attended the annual memorial service for county workers at Erlandson Park. He noted that over the years worker safety has been greatly increased. The state has approved an early voting law, and the County Legislature has approved grants to help with the process. Davis said he felt the early voting would be of more benefit to larger municipalities, but that the county needed to be able to provide these services all the same.

Town Clerk Bonnita Wallace informed the board that the state inspector passed both the Town Hall building and the Highway Department buildings. She noted that the state clerks’ meeting had been very informative, and that she learned about new procedures for board members to follow.

Assessor Heather Young-Deyell stated that the new assessment roll had been filed. Letters had been mailed to property owners who were receiving a change in their assessment. If owners have any questions about changes, the annual Grievance Day will be held on Tuesday, June 4, at the Town Hall from 4-8 p.m. with members of the assessment board of review.

Highway Superintendent Larry Mee told board members that his department had been preparing for oiling and stoning work, but were waiting for the weather to cooperate. Ditching and shoulder cutting had been done. They have gone to summer hours for work scheduling. The town-wide clean-up day was a good success. The dumpster was filled, and materials were brought during the weekend after the official hours. Workers were glad they could use their equipment to keep crushing down the debris.

Code Officer Alan Gustafson said permit applications are picking up now that warmer weather is coming on. The zoning board met, and one issue was going to be continued. A new cell tower co-location request has also been submitted for the town’s consideration.

The town-sponsored flag retirement ceremony would be held on Wednesday, June 12, at 6 p.m. in Hallquist Park in Kennedy. Following the ceremony, a community dish-to-pass picnic will be held. Anyone with old flags to be retired may bring them to the Town Clerk’s office prior to the ceremony, or to the park on that night.

The Town Board will next meet on Tuesday, June 11, at 7 p.m.
