The public is invited to participate in Audubon Community Nature Center’s annual Plant Exchange and Sale on Saturday, May 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The annual Plant Exchange and Sale at the Audubon Community Nature Center is a gathering of plant lovers where those attending can share not only their plants, but their knowledge of and enthusiasm for them as well.

On Saturday, May 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., area residents can bring their extra plants to trade for new ones or bring cash to purchase plants.

There will be a wide variety, including natives, from Audubon’s gardens as well as some donated by local nurseries.

There will be a variety of annuals, perennials, and even trees and shrubs at the event. Perennial gardeners and early vegetable growers often have extra plants to bring to the sale and trade for other plants.

Designed originally to help local gardeners share their bounty and build up Audubon’s gardens, Plant Exchange and Sale has grown over the years to help support and continue to expand the educational gardens at the Audubon Community Nature Center.

This year, Audubon’s Native Plant Committee is working to bring in some new native plants that provide extra benefits to bees, butterflies and other insects that may not be provided by plants from other countries.

Exchange rates are based on plant condition and species and are tagged when donors arrive. They get exchange tickets that can be used at check-out.

Plants to be traded must be of a non-invasive variety, in pots or containers (not plastic bags), and in good condition. If at all possible, label plants with names. Audubon reserves the right to refuse plants or adjust the exchange rate based on species and condition.

Those who don’t have plants to exchange can purchase ones to add them to a home garden.

To donate plants before the exchange, call the Audubon Community Nature Center at 569-2345 to arrange a drop-off.

The exchange is outdoors and takes place rain or shine, so come prepared for the weather.

The Audubon Community Nature Center is located at 1600 Riverside Road, one-quarter mile east of Route 62 between Jamestown and Warren.
