There are a bunch of superheroes flying around Fletcher Elementary School thanks to a new program encouraging attendance in the school.

Principal Maria DeJoy proposed the superhero program to the school’s Attendance Committee who loved the idea.

Students who have perfect attendance for the month have the opportunity to wear a superhero cape and mask during the school day.

“It is important to recognize our students with perfect attendance because it is a good reminder to students that when they come to school every day and on time, they are successful,” said Mrs. DeJoy “We wanted to recognize these students by having them be our ambassadors of good attendance. Our parents receive a thank you letter with a McDonald’s certificate for their support in their child’s perfect attendance. If you ask one of our cape crusaders why they are wearing the cape, they should know to tell you it is because they have 100 percent, or perfect attendance.”

Because the program is new, the Attendance Committee is seeing what kind of impact the superhero program has on student attendance and whether it will become a monthly incentive. When students come to school each day, they get a superhero figure to hang up in the hallway.

The school’s goal is have their hallways filled with these colorful superheroes, some flying in the air and some hanging on walls.

It is a good visual representation of why students need to be in school every day.

Since the Attendance Superhero Program started, in just one week, the school’s attendance improved by three percent.

The school’s goal is to decrease chronic absenteeism by five percent by the end of March including all grade levels, from 3-year-old universal pre-kindergarten through fourth grades.

“We hope this fun program sends a message to our parents about the importance of having our kids here everyday,” said Mrs. DeJoy.

Starting at $4.00/week.
