YWCA Women2Women Coaching Program Helps Community Women

“Single motherhood. Shared custody of my only son. Courts. Judges. Lawyers. Job loss. Financial struggles. Houses to reside in but no real home to truly live in,” Lindsey, a participant described, remembering how many challenges she faced just over one year ago when she entered the Women2Women Coaching program through the YWCA and the Coalition of Chautauqua County Women and Girls.

Lindsey was working but she was struggling when a friend and coworker mentioned Women2Women, and Lindsey began to receive the support she needed to better her life.

Five years ago, a report funded by the Dibert Foundation was filed by Patricia Smith, a non-profit consultant, that detailed the status of women and girls in Chautauqua County relative to the nation and other areas of upstate New York. The report painted a picture of the many challenges they face and educated the community on the needs. Shortly thereafter, the Coalition of Women and Girls was formed in Chautauqua County to start providing insight, support, and change. From these volunteers, a coaching program was created.

Lindsey, who was paired with retired clinician Anne, is a great example of why the Women2Women program is so important. Anne met Lindsey and, over time, hoped she would grow to trust her. “With each meeting, she began to relax more and share a small part of her life and the tremendous uncertainties and fears she was experiencing,” Anne commented. Time formed a bond though, and both appreciated meeting in the parks over the summer so Lindsey’s son could play. He also became fond of Anne, and trusted her, and the bond continued to grow.

“Anne provided me with resources for support groups, counselors and community connections to assist me with my specific circumstances. Anne genuinely listened to my own personal desires and beliefs and helped me make connections from my own soul to what was offered throughout our community,” Lindsey said.

The Women2Women program has helped meet the needs of many women in the community. Anne confirmed Lindsey achieved all the goals she set for herself to achieve over the year. Women are able to do this with the support of the Women2Women Coordinator, Debbie Yahn. Women2Women is currently part of the Empire State Poverty Reduction Initiative and the Chautauqua County Coalition of Women and Girls. Participants have come from many different programs and places in the community.

Jacqueline Phelps, executive director of the YWCA, is also thrilled with the progress of this program. “The Coalition of Chautauqua County Women and Girls has made tremendous strides in identifying issues women in our community face and helping them to overcome these challenges. The relationships these women make, with their volunteer coaches, last beyond their yearlong commitment. They truly impact each other and both have the opportunity to grow. We are proud to further our mission of empowering women through this program.”
