Opera House To Present The Bolshoi Ballet’s Jewels
FREDONIA – The 1891 Fredonia Opera House will present one of the world’s greatest ballet companies – the Bolshoi Ballet – performing the ballet “Jewels” Saturday at 1 p.m.
Captured live via satellite from Moscow in January 2014, this performance is the third of six classical ballets from the Bolshoi that the Opera House will present over the winter months.
This opulent triptych was inspired by George Balanchine’s visit to the famous jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels on New York’s Fifth Avenue. With this, his first abstract ballet, he built an homage of enchanting beauty to the dance schools that had forged his style: Paris, New York and St. Petersburg. Each school is represented, respectively, by a contrasting jewel: emerald, ruby and diamond.
“Jewels” offers a unique occasion to enjoy Balanchine’s visually captivating work, as the Bolshoi is the only company authorized by the Balanchine Trust to film and broadcast his masterpiece. The Balanchine Trust is an institution set to preserve and protect Balanchine’s legacy. In order to give audiences a performance that remains true to his style, dancers trained by Balanchine himself contributed to help the Bolshoi dancers rehearse his dazzling choreography.
The ballet stars Olga Smirnova, Semyon Chudin, Vladislav Lantratov, Anna Tikhomirova, Ekaterina Krysanova and the Bolshoi Corps de Ballet. It runs two hours, 17 minutes.
Individual tickets to “Jewels” are $15 for the general public and $10 for students. A special Live in HD Series flexible subscription of eight tickets that can be used however you want one at a time to eight different HD Series events, all at once for eight people, or anything in between, is $116. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Opera House Box Office or by phone at 679-1891, Tuesday-Friday, 1-5 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online anytime at fredopera.org.
The Bolshoi Ballet broadcast series is made possible by Dr. James M. and Marcia Merrins, who funded the purchase of the satellite transmission and projection equipment used in the series. Additional support comes from the United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County, the Arts Services Initiative of WNY Inc., and the Give for Greatness program.
