Ten students from Jamestown and Frewsburg high schools took the podium at the Jamestown Boys and Girls Club to compete in the Jamestown Optimist Club’s annual speech competition addressing this year’s title “The moment I Realized I Belonged-My Definition of Community.”
The event brought together young speakers each delivering a researched presentation on poise, content and delivery.
Taking home the first-place prize was Peyton Joly, second was Gina Delgado and third was Rachel Hobbs, all from Jamestown High School.
“I’ve learned that community isn’t a single, rigid circle with a clear boundary,” Joly said in her speech. “It’s the dynamic and fluid space where the different circles of our lives overlap”.
The panel of judges consisted of our local community leaders – Janet Lindstrom, Carol Drake and Jami Sorrento – said the level of competition this year was high.

“Our goal with this contest to give young people a platform to develop their communication skills and share their unique perspectives,” said Cindy Conner, Jamestown Optimist Club event chairperson.
The first and second place winners would then advance to the district competition that was held in Lockport, where Peyton and one student from Lockport then advanced to the state contest in New Hartford. On the state level, Peyton competed with students from all over New York and New England ages ranging from 11-18 years old. The winner on that level went on to compete in St. Louis on the national level.
