Library Sets November Computer Classes
Prendergast Library will offer a wide variety of computer classes during November, including some that reflect partnerships with the Social Security Administration and Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES.
Classes taught by library staff include:
Introduction to the Online Marketplace from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10. Learn more about eBay, Amazon and Craigslist and how to list items for sale. Knowledge and use of an email system is a prerequisite.
Introduction to the OverDrive Media Console from 1-2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13. Learn to access free eBooks. Bring an e-Reader device such as a Kindle, Nook, iPad or tablet with the Kindle app to get started right away. Participants must have a library card in good standing, know their pin number, be able to use an email account and be familiar with Amazon (for Kindles) or iTunes (for iPad).
Introduction to Microsoft Office 2010 from 2-4 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, Nov. 16, 18, 23 and 25. Learn about spreadsheets, word processing, presentations and basic publishing.
Get to Know your Ancestors from 2-3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20. Learn to use Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest as well as local search tools. A library card in good standing is a prerequisite.
Introduction to Windows 8 from 9:30-11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24. Learn how to navigate, use new features and configure the system to user preferences.
Joyce Golden of Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES will present classes made possible by support from the New York State Library’s Adult Literacy Library Services grant program through the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System. These include:
Basic Computer Classes from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Nov. 2-6
Taking Care of Business Online from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9
Introduction to Email from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13. This class is recommended as a prerequisite for anyone who does not have a working email address and would like to take Benefits of Using My Social Security Online being offered at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3 by Chandi Jo Brooks, a Social Security Administration claims specialist.
Basic Microsoft Excel from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30
All classes are free and open to the public. To sign up for a class or make an appointment for individual assistance, call 484-7135. One-on-one help with resumes or technology use is available, and 3D printing demonstrations can also be scheduled. Prendergast Library is located at 509 Cherry St., Jamestown.
