Again

Today marks exactly 15 years since the passing of my first and most influential music mentor. On Oct. 13, 2001, Jeremy Wright Kinnear died in the early morning hours of his 21st birthday as the result of a hit-and-run accident in Fredonia. But despite his short time with us, the 1999 Southwestern High School graduate had already impacted the greater Jamestown area music scene in a deep and profound way as the drummer for Atica. The band - which also included local musicians Ryan Melquist, Ryan Ecklund, Colin Shaffer and Matt Clark - began when its members were still in high school and had ...

Giving A Speech? There Are Tricks To It

Back in my college days, as an adjunct to my part-time job as a newspaper sports writer, I assisted in radio broadcasts of some basketball games."You sound good," I was told. Some people also told me that while my voice sounded good, I had nothing interesting to say. Hah! Probably fans of the losing team, right? But sounding good involves more than vocal cords. It isn't what we say so much as it is what the people hear. All too often, we forget that when we write down our speeches, and just assume that paragraphs that look good to our eyes will sound good to others' ears. There are ...

Remembering The Pledge

I remember starting off every school day by standing, facing the good old Red, White and Blue and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. We would all kind of murmur together, staring at the flag with our hands over our hearts. From a very young age, we learned that pledge and said it every day until we all graduated high school.I'm not sure if they still say it in school anymore - I'm not even sure if it would sound the same. After all, I'd be surprised to see any of us Americans stand up and say anything together, let alone in unison.I love my country more than you'll ever know, but right ...

Die Hard Fans (And Trust Me … We Have)

Most who know me, know I have an allegiance to the sports teams of Cleveland, the Indians and Browns especially. (The NBA really isn't as exciting for me as college basketball, so I check out scores from college's MAC conference - Kent State, Akron especially - and I check out Cleveland State's games when I can, and I pull for Ohio State in both football and basketball.)People ask me, "Why Cleveland," and I've often told this story regarding the Indians. My dad was in the Navy ('42-'45) and when he came home on leave, his ship would often dock in Cleveland and it sometimes took him a day ...
