Almost Everywhere A Raccoon

Raccoons.Make a sandwich or so, stow it far back in the Havahart and wait.Quillow never saw the first of the three I trapped, set up a huge ruckus with No. 2 (who sounded VERY nasty in reply) and then, by number three, both dogs accepted the caged visitor as just another "normal" event around the house. Believe me, one never knows . . . .I was assured the three were youngsters, born the year before. In that case, I must now be dealing with the matriarch - or is it the patriarch? It looks no larger - and is certainly tame enough to climb onto the deck when I sit just inside at night. But ...

A Change For The Better

What do you think of when you hear the term metamorphosis? My mind immediately goes to the change that a moth undergoes to become a butterfly although Webster's defines it merely as a change in shape or form. One summer years ago we did a VBS program that had a song about the butterfly. It said, "The butterfly will lay some eggs, out comes a caterpillar. She eat some leaves then eats some more. It takes a lot to fill her." Finally she makes a chrysalis or a cocoon and in just a short time out comes a butterfly. This is a rather simplified account but it says what needs to be said. The ...

Do You Dare Shut Out A Nice Neighbor?

I want to tell you a story. When I'm finished, I invite you to close your eyes to visualize this talk of two families. One family lives relatively securely in a nice comfortable home. The home is surrounded by a large expanse of lawn. The family is quite busy with its respective responsibilities. They have no time to mow their lawn. So, they decided to hire out for a landscape service. A charge, though a bit pricy, is agreed upon. The family is pleased with the workmanship. They have time for other important activities without concern for their landscape. One memorable day, a new family ...

Writer Gets Her Kicks On Route 66: Part Six

Editor's Note: This is the fifth column in a series featuring the author's travels along Route 66.Our beloved Route 66 had become mostly frontage roads in the State of Texas. In some cases ranchers had installed cattle guards at property entrances to keep their cattle and other animals off the highway. We saw signs posted in other states warning drivers about free range cattle. Cattle guards are rectangular metal frames with rows of pipes crossing ditches that cross driveway entrances and even roads. Cattle and other animals avoid crossing them to prevent entangling their legs. In a ...

Factories And Forebears — My Grandfather Carl Forsberg

When I was a little girl living on Ivy Street, I could hear the rhythmic pounding of metal on metal from factories down along the Chadakoin River. I remember it as an incessant noise to daily life, not loud but always in the air- sometimes louder than others depending on the wind and weather. Somewhere down there in the blocks and blocks and blocks of several storied brick buildings that run along the Chadakoin River, my maternal grandfather Carl Forsberg worked five days a week at Jamestown Metal Desk. He had come from Sweden in 1926 and found a job there. He kept it until he retired ...
