WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits rose for the first time in five weeks even though the economy and job market have been recovering briskly from the coronavirus pandemic. Jobless claims edged up by 4,000 to 353,000 from a pandemic low 349,000 a week earlier, the Labor Department reported Thursday. For the second day in a row, the number of active cases of COVID-19, people with the virus in the hospital and those in quarantine in Chautauqua County all increased. The health department on Thursday reported 210 active cases, up from the 199 recorded Wednesday; 10 people in the hospital with the virus, up one from the day before; and 331 in quarantine, an increase from the 316 noted Wednesday. The county also reported 37 new cases of the virus and one new virus-related death. There have been 9,799 confirmed cases to date along with 9,428 recoveries and 161 virus-related deaths.
Several options remain available in Chautauqua County for those who wish to get the COVID-19 vaccine. The county Health Department on Tuesday reminded local residents of those options. “If you have been waiting for full FDA approval of a COVID-19 vaccine before you get vaccinated, today is your day!” the county said in a message posted to Facebook.
