Those Bad COVID Hoarders Were … Gulp!?

I remember walking into grocery stores back in April, seeing long gray lines of empty shelves in the paper goods section, and muttering, “Those stupid hoarders! “The world is going to hell in a hand basket and they scarf up a six-months supply of toilet paper when, in a true emergency, we could revert to what people did a century and more ago.” (Modern toilet paper was first available in 1857, says Google.) Anyway, back in April, I condemned toilet paper hoarders as “them.” “Them” is anyone who does something that upright, American, intelligent, patriotic and ...

Reopening The Schools

There was a recent editorial in our newspaper about the importance of reopening the schools. It touched on a couple of points that I thought should be repeated. First, this is probably the most important issue we will face during the coronavirus pandemic; and secondly, even if you don’t like the governor, his linking the matter of reopening schools to the spread of the disease makes sense. Let’s face it, getting kids back in school is more important than opening restaurants or bars. It is more important than whether the Bills or Sabres have a season. Our kids are suffering from ...

People Need To Wear Masks

Michelle Malkin’s rant, “ Mask Mandates Are A Public Health Menace” (Sunday, July 18-19 ) presents a new low for The Post-Journal’s opinion page. Not only is this piece by Malkin factually wrong, but it is also dangerous in that it tries to persuade people to go against all health experts’ advice. Malkin quotes Dr. William Schaffer, an infectious disease expert from Vanderbilt University, who in March said that there is not much evidence that a face mask would be effective against the COVID-19. That was in March, before we knew much about this virus. What Malkin ...

It’s Time For JHS To Rise Above, Acknowledge And Remove The Mascot

Imagine you are attending your favorite high school sporting event, football. You’re sitting in the stands with your family, ready for the game to begin, snacks in hand, excitement in the air. The teams start to enter and your excitement quickly turns to hurt as you see the picture of an upside-down crucifix on a shield stitched on the visiting team’s uniforms. The “crusaders” they’re called. Of course, it is a change from their previous version of the mascot which included an image of the prophet Mohammad in battle gear holding the shield, but just as hurtful. And still, ...

Social Justice Warriors Must Address Core Woes

Justice is a theme in every religious and moral tradition, a part of the human experience, and an ideal in every society, but what is justice? The Bible gives examples, but they are similar to other traditions: do not spread false reports, do not help a guilty person by being a malicious witness, do not follow the crowd in doing wrong, when you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd, do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly, do not accept a bribe, and so on. Even without these examples, people ...

Chautauqua County Democratic Committee Has Both Voice, Face

Regional Editor John D’Agostino on July 10 labeled the Chautauqua County Democratic Committee as being in shambles and having no message, voice or face. We do have a voice and face in 2020 and his name is Richard Morrisroe, our candidate for Chautauqua County executive. As the opinion correctly points out, “Morrisroe, Dunkirk city attorney, is knowledgeable and experienced in politics …” Morrisroe is offering real leadership and has the training and experience to run the county on day one. Incumbent District Attorney Patrick Swanson is a winner and serves in a non-political ...
