Douglas Essek

Douglas P. Essek of Fredonia announced on Friday he is a candidate for the seat of the New York State Assembly’s 150th district.

A Republican, Essek’s declaration comes one day after current Assemblyman Andrew Goodell’s announcement to retire at the end of 2024 from the position.

In his announcement, Essek says he has a diverse background having served as mayor and trustee for the village of Fredonia while working in the public school system. He also worked in the private sector and law enforcement as well as decades of service volunteering for the fire service. Essek is seeking the endorsement of the Republicans and Conservative Party for the vacancy.

“With so many problems in New York State, our county will need a nominee who has experience in government, who is knowledgeable in current issues that face our communities and someone who can provide common sense solutions,” Essek said, noting he plans to bring his vast experience to Albany and successfully represent the district in the State Assembly.

In the meantime, Westfield resident Andrew Molitor also has filed to seek the same position and Republican endorsement. Party leaders are expected to convene sometime next week and make a decision.

Michael Bobseine indicated he will run for the Assembly as the Democratic candidate earlier this month.
