JCC Men, Women Claim WNYAC Swimming Titles
BUFFALO — You can’t ask for much more than perfection, and that is exactly what the Jamestown Community College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams accomplished in conference, capturing both championships with undefeated seasons.
The unblemished records were finished off last Wednesday at the WNYAC meet, hosted by Erie CC, where the Jayhawks topped the home Kats and Genesee CC.
“Sweeping the WNYAC on both sides is something that we had not accomplished in our program history. It definitely is one of our first goals to win the WNYAC titles each year,” said head coach Todd Conklin.
On the women’s side, this is back-to-back league titles and the third overall. They jumped out to an early lead, capturing the 200-yard medley relay behind the team of Roxanne Lothian, Katrina DeGroff, Desiree Putt and Emily Swan.
Jamestown CC followed that up by taking the top three spots in the 1,650-yard freestyle, with Addison Lawson winning, Sophia Gervasio second and Cassie Lyon third.
Lothian and Swan were back in the pool for the 200-yard freestyle, where they finished first and second, respectively.
The Jayhawks grabbed first and third in the 50-yard freestyle, with Putt winning by over a half-second, and Willow Chase placing third.
In the 200-yard individual medley, Gervasio brought home a second place, and Degroff came in third.
Chase was dominant in the 100-yard butterfly, not just winning but doing so by 7 seconds.
Swan captured another first in the 100-yard freestyle, with teammates Lyon and Lawson touching in third and fifth, respectively. Putt and Gervasio came in second and third in the 100 backstroke.
It was another first, second and third for the Jayhawks in the 500-yard freestyle. Freshman Roxy Lothian was on top, with Lyon and Chase just behind.
Lastly, for the women, Degroff swam the fastest time in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Lawson coming in second.
“Heading into regionals, I think we’ve had a lot of successful swims since we’ve been back in the second semester,” Conklin said. “We’re ready to ramp it up and try to capture our second straight regional title and our first on the men’s side since the COVID year. The regional title is goal No. 2, and I feel the kids are motivated and excited for next weekend.”
For the men, the Jayhawks’ Cameron Milewski continued his torrid pace in the diving well, winning the 3-meter event with a score of 192.37, just one day after setting three new program records.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Daniel Peterson set a blistering pace, winning by over a second.
Zach Johnson won the 200-yard freestyle by almost 10 seconds, with Christian Merrill grabbing third.
It was another third for the Jayhawks in the 1,650-yard freestyle as Samuel Hersom cut 17 seconds off of his qualifying time. Hersom also finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly.
Peterson and Milewski continued their all-Jayhawk battles, with Peterson winning the 100-yard freestyle and Milewski earning second.
Christian Merrill joined the action in the 100-yard backstroke, where he took second, and the 200-yard individual medley, where he finished third.
Diego Villarroel just topped Merrill in the 200-yard individual medley, grabbing second. The freshman was also third in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The last event for the men was the 800-yard freestyle relay, an event won by the Jayhawks’ team of Hersom, Villarroel, Johnson and Peterson.
Jamestown CC now shifts its focus to the postseason, with regional and national championships on the horizon.
“The coaches couldn’t be more proud of the hard work our student-athletes have been putting in,” Conklin said. “We have broken a few records through the year, but I feel our best is yet to come. We all know that this next month truly is the month to focus in on all the final details and prepare for what’s in front of us. The championship meets are the ultimate prize coming the first week of March, where we will look to win another national title.”
The National Junior College Athletic Association championship takes place in Fort Pierce, Florida, during the first week of March. Before the Jayhawks focus on these events, they have the Region 3 championship, hosted by Erie CC from Feb. 13-15.
