Gonzalez’s Defense Key As Red & Green Top Spartans

Dominic Gonzalez put on a basketball clinic in the fourth quarter Wednesday night.

Teammate Elijah Farmer did it virtually the entire game.

Together, it was too much for Williamsville North.

Gonzalez scored 21 points, dished out six assists and collected seven steals, and Farmer poured in 24 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked four shots to spark Jamestown to a 62-47 victory in an Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 contest at McElrath Gymnasium.

The win — the second of the season over the Spartans — raised the Red & Green’s record to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in the division, while Williamsville North dropped to 7-5 and 3-2.

Until the final eight minutes, however, the outcome was in doubt. After being deadlocked 22-22 at halftime, Jamestown — behind 10 points from Farmer — pulled ahead 39-33 after three quarters.

That’s when Gonzalez showed his all-around talents.

In the first four minutes, he made four steals that he turned into layups to highlight a 14-3 Red & Green run. And after Greyson Goehle nailed a trey for Williamsville North to close within 53-39 with just under three minutes remaining, Gonzalez responded with a 3-pointer to essentially put the game away. In the span of five minutes, he scored 11 points and had four steals. For the game, he shot 8 of 17 from the floor.

“As good as he is offensively, I don’t think people realize how good a defender he is,” Jamestown coach Billy Miley said. “He can cause a lot of havoc for some other guards. He picked his spots really well today.”

Farmer, a 6-foot-5 forward, was equally as impressive, shooting 10 of 20 from the field, including 3 of 8 from the arc, to go along with his dominant defensive presence in the low post.

“He never really looks rushed,” Miley said. “He can play at all three levels. He shoots really well, he puts it on the floor and he’s one of our best passers.”

The Red & Green will be back in action tonight when they entertain Lancaster in another ECIC Division 1 game. Jamestown won the first meeting with the Legends (7-6, 1-3) 65-46 earlier this month.

“They lost two buzzer beaters against Sweet Home and Clarence,” Miley said. “They’ve got a couple young kids that have improved a lot from last year and it took us a while to pull away up there, so it’s certainly not going to be an easy one.”

NOTES: Jamestown’s Gavin Johnson chipped in 9 points and grabbed five rebounds, and Jericho Thagard added 5 points, three boards and three assists. … Goehle led the Spartans with 13 points and Chris Fagnan added 11. … The Red & Green jumped out to a 16-5 lead after the first quarter, but Williamsville North used a 13-0 second-quarter run that helped forge the tie at the break.
