Healthy Rhinehart Pitches Falconer Past Frewsburg In ‘C’ Prequarterfinals

FALCONER — With Emily Rhinehart back in the circle, Falconer is a totally different softball team.
Frewsburg found out the hard way Tuesday.
Rhinehart tossed a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts and three walks as the fifth-seeded Golden Falcons beat the 12th-seeded Bears 10-1 in a Section VI Class C prequarterfinal at Ernie Strickland Field.
Falconer, which is also getting back a healthy Hannah Melquist at just the right time, jumped on top with a four-run second inning.
Emily Zaranek was hit by a pitch to open the frame, but was erased when Rhinehart reached on a fielder’s choice. Courtesy-runner Rachael Swanson then stole second, Katrina Schrantz reached on an infield single and Melquist singled to left-center field to load the bases. Swanson scored on a wild pitch and Addison Calimeri drove in Schrantz with a groundout before Nazariah Neal walked. With runners at first and third, Neal stole second before Nylah Sharpe hit a two-run double to make it 4-0.

The hosts added three more runs in the third inning. Mylie Zaranek reached on an error and Emily Zaranek singled to center field ahead of Rhinehart’s RBI grounder that resulted in an error. After a strikeout, Melquist hit a two-run single to make it 7-0.
Frewsburg broke up the shutout in the top of the sixth inning. Presleigh Stelmack led off with a walk, stole second and went to third on an error before Mya Carmen’s second hit of the day went for an RBI single.
Falconer added its final three runs in the bottom of the frame. Sharpe singled and stole second before going to third on a wild pitch as Emily Zaranek walked. Rhinehart followed with a two-run single, Schrantz singled and Melquist hit an RBI single to make it 10-1.
Melquist finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored; Sharpe was 2 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored; and Schrantz was 3 for 4 with a run scored.
Carmen had Frewsburg’s only two hits. Pitcher Teagan Nazario struck out three in the circle.
Falconer will travel to No. 4 Silver Creek for a 5 p.m. Thursday quarterfinal.
ARNOLD-HILL HITS WALK-OFF HOMER
RANDOLPH — No. 6 Randolph and No. 11 Cattaraugus-Little Valley got into a pitchers’ duel in the prequarterfinals of the Class C playoffs and it took until extra innings for the batters to break through.
With one out and a runner on in the bottom of the eighth inning, Randolph’s Grace Arnold-Hill hammered a two-run walk-off home run to give the Cardinals a 2-0 victory.
Randolph received a big performance from Ryanne Bushey in the circle as she only gave up one hit in eight innings of work and struck out four batters.
Madison Rogan was just as strong for Cattaraugus-Little Valley going the distance and giving up just three hits, one walk and striking out three in the game. The Timberwolves (5-11) only hit was a double by Emma West.
The Cardinals will travel to No. 3 Westfield, the defending Class C champion, for a 5 p.m. Thursday quarterfinal.
JOHN HAS BIG DAY AT PLATE
GOWANDA — CeCe John went 4 for 5 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored to lead an 11-hit Gowanda attack as the eighth-seeded Panthers beat No. 9 Maple Grove/Panama 14-3 in a Class C prequarterfinal.
Addison Kota doubled twice and scored four runs; Holland Browning was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored; and Lauren Kelly was 2 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored for Gowanda.
Kota threw six innings in the circle, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out 10 and walking two.
Cassie Lyon went 2 for 3 with a triple and a run scored; Meg Ryan was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI; and Alex Caldwell singled and scored a run for the Red Dragons.
Jessica Lyon struck out five in three innings in the circle.
Gowanda will travel to No. 1 Barker for a 5 p.m. Thursday quarterfinal.
PORTVILLE OUSTS CASSADAGA VALLEY
PORTVILLE — No. 10 Cassadaga Valley scored four runs in the final two innings, but it was not enough to get past No. 7 Portville in the Class C prequarterfinals, falling 7-6.
The Cougars were led by Chloe Lundberg going 2 for 2 with two RBIs. Emiley Anderson went 2 for 4 with an RBI, Faith McVey was 2 for 4, and Hailey Anderson added a double. Catie Russell gave up eight hits and four walks while striking out one in the circle for Cassadaga Valley.
Portville was led by Madison Ford with a double and Emily Collins went 2 for 2.
The Panthers will travel to No. 2 Chautauqua Lake for a 5 p.m. Thursday quarterfinal.
HILLBILLIES COAST PAST JFK
FREDONIA — Danielle Palisin tossed a six-hitter, surrendered one earned run and was the beneficiary of an eight-run third inning as No. 2 Fredonia upended No. 15 John F. Kennedy 15-3 in five innings in a Class B prequarterfinal.
Highlighting the big rally were a two-run double by Ava Muck, and singles by Cassie Cramer and Rihanna Benner. That was more than enough for Palisin, who struck out six and didn’t issue a walk.
Offensively, Naomi Muck collected three hits to lead the Hillbillies, who improved to 15-3. Jenna Fryberger added two hits, including a two-run home run, Ava Muck also had a single to go along with the two-bagger.
Fredonia will now take on No. 7 Wilson at 5 p.m. Thursday. Wilson advanced by virtue of a 5-4 victory over No. 10 East Aurora. That game will be played at Fredonia, weather permitting. If necessary, it could be moved to Gowanda, according to Hillbillies’ coach Jesse Beers.
GATORS ELIMINATE SOUTHWESTERN
ALLEGANY — Peyton Truman went 2 for 3 with three RBIs as No. 6 Allegany-Limestone eliminated No. 11 Southwestern 7-3 in the Class B prequarterfinals.
The Gators were led by Kailey Truman in the circle giving up five hits, two walks and two earned runs while striking out 12 in the win. Truman also had an RBI double while Abby Peck went 2 for 4.
Southwestern pitched well with Arianna Silakowski only giving up one earned run on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Siri DuBois hit a triple for the Trojans, Hayden Dawson doubled, and both Madi Burnett and Addison Shaw hit RBIs.
Allegany-Limestone will host No. 14 Newfane in a 5 p.m. Thursday quarterfinal.
SALAMANCA ADVANCES
BUFFALO — Jaelynn Brown went 4 for 5 with two doubles and a triple to lead No. 16 Salamanca to a 25-4 Class B prequarterfinal victory over No. 1 Olmsted at McCarthy Park.
Kenzie Crouse was 3 for 6 with two doubles and Ayla Newark was 3 for 4 for the Warriors.
Charli Ross threw a three-hitter with four strikeouts and three walks in the circle.
Salamanca will travel to No. 9 Eden for a 5 p.m. Thursday quarterfinal.
JAMESTOWN ELIMINATED
NIAGARA FALLS — No. 2 Niagara Falls handed No. 3 Jamestown a 7-3 Class AAA semifinal defeat.
The Wolverines will now take on No. 1 Lancaster in a best-of-three series beginning Thursday.
DUNKIRK ELIMINATED
ELMA — No. 6 Iroquois handed No. 11 Dunkirk a 13-0 Class A prequarterfinal defeat.
The Redhawks will travel to No. 3 Depew for a 5 p.m. Thursday quarterfinal.
