Bears’ Gruber No-Hits Wolfpack, Haglund Shines At Plate

FREWSBURG — An eight-run bottom of the fourth inning helped Frewsburg put away Clymer/Sherman/Panama on its way to a 13-0 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 baseball win Monday.

Aidan Gruber tossed a five-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts and five walks on the mound for the Bears (1-1, 1-0).

Chase Haglund went 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Frewsburg offense. Daniel Peterson was 2 for 3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored; Mason Eckman singled, drove in two runs and scored a run; Cole Mazzurco doubled, drove in a run and scored a run; and Drake Beckstrom and Blake Weaver each singled and drove in a run.

Wolfpack (0-2, 0-1) starter Tate Catanese struck out three in three-plus innings on the mound.

CLARENCE

TOPS JAMESTOWN

CLARENCE — A six-run bottom of the sixth inning helped Clarence put away Jamestown for an 8-1 Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 victory.

Julian Jackson threw the first 3 1/3 innings, striking out four before Karson Milne threw the next two innings and struck out one for the Red & Green (1-1, 0-1). Blake Smith Jr. got the final two outs on the mound.

Carter Rizzuto, Julian Jackson, Dom Weber and Adam Kubera each singled for Jamestown. Kubera’s RBI single in the fourth plated Weber, who had singled, to tie the game at 1-1.

The Red Devils improved to 3-0 overall and in the league. The teams will meet again Wednesday at the Martin Road Athletic Complex.

MARAUDERS START FAST

DUNKIRK — A seven-run bottom of the first inning jump-started Dunkirk en route to a 13-7 nonleague win over Brocton.

The Bulldogs (1-1, 0-0 CCAA D2) scored three runs in the top of the first inning before the Marauders (2-0, 0-0 CCAA D1) quickly took control.

Paul Trippy led the Dunkirk offense with three hits, including a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Greg Orcutt had two hits and two runs scored, while John Bache and Gabe Valentine each added a double. Valentine and Anthony Cosme each drove in a pair of runs.

Cosme, Alex Biscaro, Bache and Danny Hoth combined on a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts. Just two of Brocton’s seven runs were earned.

Chris Furman had two hits and two RBIs for the Bulldogs. Nathan Laurito and Jeremy Weisner combined on an eight-hitter with three strikeouts while walking seven.

PINE VALLEY HAS CONTROL PROBLEMS

SOUTH DAYTON — Pine Valley pitchers combined to walk 15 and hit four batters in a 9-5 nonleague loss to Ellicottville.

Cameron Mendell and Rylan Benjamin combined for 11 strikeouts on the mound for the Eagles (1-1, 0-0 CCAA D3).

Cameron Mendell tripled, drove in a run and scored twice; Ryan Norton had two hits, an RBI and a run scored; and Carson Mendell scored twice for Ellicottville.

Camryn Slade had two hits and two runs scored; Finnigen Steward had two hits, including a double, two RBIs and a run scored; and Trent Ivett and Cameron Howard each had a single, an RBI and a run scored for Pine Valley (0-1, 0-0 CCAA D2).

CARDINALS OUTHIT MAPLE GROVE

BEMUS POINT — Randolph pounded out 14 hits and 19 runs before snow forced the game to be called in the top of the sixth inning with the Cardinals beating Maple Grove 19-9 in nonleague action.

Allen Root led Randolph (1-1, 0-0 CCAA D3) with three hits, five RBIs and two runs scored, while Kevin McElwain had three hits, an RBI and three runs scored. Wyatt Weaver had two hits, an RBI and three runs scored; Bryson Pitts had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored; and David Malone had the Cardinals’ lone extra-base hit with a double, while also driving in a run and scoring three times.

Camden Lombardo had two hits, including a triple, an RBI and two runs scored; Kyle Yohe had two hits and three runs scored; and Cornell, Darr and Collins all doubled for the Red Dragons (0-1, 0-0 CCAA D2).

HERRICK LEADS SALAMANCA

SALAMANCA — Jake Herrick went 3 for 3 with three runs scored and two stolen bases to lead Salamanca to an 11-0 shutout of Chautauqua Lake in nonleague action at Veterans Park.

Cory Holleran was 2 for 3 with three RBIs; Payton Bradley tripled and scored three runs; and Kruz Coustenis and Calum Farnum each drove in a pair of runs for the Warriors (6-0, 0-0 CCAA D1).

Farnum and Bradley combined for the shutout on the mound with Bradley striking out all three batters he faced.

The Eagles (0-0 CCAA D2) fell to 0-1 overall.

STENSTROM TOSSES NO-HITTER

SINCLAIRVILLE — Erik Stenstrom threw a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts and one walk as Falconer blanked Cassadaga Valley 20-0 in nonleague action.

Logan Johnson went 3 for 5 to lead the Golden Falcons (1-0, 0-0 CCAA D3) offense. Stenstrom, Gavin Curtis and Chase Bianco each had two hits, while Isaiah Washington walked three times.

The Cougars (0-0 CCAA D2) fell to 0-1 overall.

GOWANDA FALLS TO NICHOLS

GOWANDA — A 5-0 hole after two innings was too big for Gowanda to overcome in a 6-4 nonleague loss to Nichols.

Blake Herman doubled in a pair of runs and scored a run in a four-run fifth inning for the Panthers. Carter Capozzi, Carson Huch and Noah Lauer each added a single in the loss.

Capozzi and Seth Geiger combined to strike out 11 on the mound, but walked six and hit a batter. Gowanda also committed three errors in the field.
