Calph Shoots Travel League-Record 76 At Whispering Pines Golf Course
MEADVILLE, Pa. — Robert Calph edged Ed Tofil for a one-stroke victory in this week’s Wednesday Travel League event at Whispering Pines Golf Course. Calph’s low round of 76 matched the league course record set by Tofil last year.
Bob North finished third with 82. Calph’s 8th tour victory of the season also gave him 15 rounds under 80, equaling the season record, jointly held by Ron Rys and Josh Hilliker.
Calph and Hilliker tied for the low front nine with 39s. Calph and Tofil tied for the low back nine with 37s. In the B Flight, Dave Criscione won a tiebreaker over Mike Willoughby. In the C Flight, Bob Kujawa won a tiebreaker over Pat Weaver. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Frank Benamati.
Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — North (No. 7), Calph (Nos. 10, 17), Jeff Nelson (No. 11) and Tom Destro (No. 14); B Flight — Criscione (Nos. 1, 4), Gary Haase (No. 3), Willoughby (No. 7), Tony Destro (No. 12), Joe Bifaro (No. 13), John Waterman (No. 15) and Phil Hopkins (No. 18); C Flight — Dave Franklin (No. 2), Pete Pinkoski (Nos. 3, 11, 17), Jack Hood (Nos. 8, 9), Bob Kujawa (No. 10), Dan Kaszuba (No. 12) and Don Kujawa (No. 18).
Closest to the pin were: North (Nos. 2, 8), Dave Wallace (No. 11) and Calph (No.17, just 14 inches from the cup). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Tofil (A Flight), Tony Destro (B) and Kaszuba (C).

Dave Franklin became just the fourth golfer in league history to reach 4,000 career points. Dave Criscione moved past Mike Willoughby into 15th place on the All-Time Points List.
This week the league heads north to Arrowhead Golf Club in Akron with a 10 a.m. start. Several openings exist. Inquiries must be made by noon Monday.
On Wednesday, Sept. 18, the league will hold its 10th annual Commissioner’s Cup, honoring the memory of past league Commissioner Bruce “Java” Chrabasz. The event takes place at Chautauqua Golf Club with a 9:30 a.m. start. Golfers can sign up at 716-785-2291.
