Sam Hough pitched his heart out Friday night.
Eventually, the Jamestown Tarp Skunks offense scored him some runs.
Hough gave Jamestown its longest outing of the year from a starting pitcher and the Tarp Skunks scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to beating the Niagara Falls Americans 5-1 in a Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League game at Diethrick Park.
The win improved fourth-place Jamestown to 11-12 in the West Division, while last-place Niagara Falls fell to 7-17.
Hough and Americans starting pitcher Aiden Paul were locked in a pitchers’ duel early with Niagara Falls jumping on top 1-0 in the third inning as Finn Parker singled and later scored on an error.
Hough then pitched shutout ball over his final five innings before leaving after a rain delay in the top of the eighth inning. The right-hander from Bates College went 7 1/3 innings and struck out three while walking three and allowing six hits.
In the bottom of the fifth, Jamestown finally broke through, in the process chasing Paul. Brandon McClain-Banks (Youngstown State University) and Leo Doyle (Wagner College) hit back-to-back one-out singles before Bobby Stang (University of Dayton) flew out to right field, advancing McClain-Banks to third base. Kobe Jones (Shorter University) then hit an RBI double to tie the game.
Jesse Capitano relieved for the Americans and DJ Stoianovich (Mansfield University) greeted him with a two-run single to give the Tarp Skunks a 3-1 lead.
Dunkirk graduate Peyton Ahlstrom (Fredonia State University) took over on the mound for the Tarp Skunks after a short rain delay, pitching around a walk and a single before getting the final two outs of the eighth inning.
Jamestown tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as both Stang and Jones scored on wild pitches to make it 5-1.
Again in the ninth, with rain beginning to fall again, Ahlstrom pitched around a one-out error and a two-out walk before striking out Jake Hollins for the final out of the game.
Jones finished 3 for 4 and McClain-Banks had a pair of hits for the Tarp Skunks, who outhit the Americans 10-7.
Jamestown will travel to Dunn Field in Elmira to take on the Pioneers at 6:35 p.m. today before returning home for a doubleheader Sunday against Elmira. First pitch for Game 1 that afternoon is 2 p.m.
