WESTFIELD — Michael Jauss became the first eighth-grader in Chautauqua Lake baseball program history to throw a complete game and secured a 5-2 win over Westfield in his first varsity start on Thursday in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 action.

Jauss gave up just three hits, walked three and struck out eight to secure the win for the Eagles.

Chautauqua Lake provided all the run support it needed in the top of the first when it scored three runs. Greyson Wellman scored on a sacrifice fly by Nolan Olson for the first run, then Cayden Blackman plated both Devin Hewes and Nate Henry to go up 3-0.

Westfield responded in the bottom of the first when Joel Stein was knocked home by Danny Bratton on an RBI groundout.

The Wolverines would not score again until Aaron Fuller hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Chautauqua Lake (2-2, 2-0) added insurance runs in the fifth inning when Olson hit an RBI single to score Hewes and Clayton Smith hit a sacrifice fly to score Henry who reached base for third time via walk.

Stein pitched the first five innings for Westfield (0-2, 0-2) in which he walked six and struck out five. Trent Ramm finished the final two innings for the Wolverines and struck out three while walking three.

FREDONIA RALLIES FOR WIN

ARCADE — Down 5-0 early, Fredonia rallied to down Pioneer 13-11 in a nonleague game at Arcade Park.

“We had chances early and weren’t able to capitalize,” ‘Billies’ coach Tim Cowan said. “It was a great team effort. We had seven different players score runs, we had four different pitchers all contribute, and without any one of them we wouldn’t have been able to complete the comeback. As a coach, that’s a good feeling on the bus ride home when everybody has a hand in it.”

Owen Rush provided the insurance runs, belting a mammoth two-run home run to center field in the seventh inning to push Fredonia’s lead to 13-10. He finished with two hits.

Also contributing offensively were Ashton Putney with two doubles and a run scored; Matt Cowan with two hits and two runs scored; Brady Helmer with a base hit, two sacrifice flies and three RBIs; Nathan Sercu with three runs scored; and Andrew Cowan, Colin Luce and Colin Crowell with two runs scored each..

Sercu was the winning pitcher, working one inning. Putney earned the save after going 1 2/3 innings and striking out three.

Fredonia returns to action at noon Saturday when it travels to Grand Island.

HERMAN PITCHES GEM

GOWANDA — Blake Herman and Brayden Smith combined on a three-hitter and Gowanda upended Ellicottville 5-1 in a Division 3 game.

Herman worked six innings, allowed three hits, struck out 12, walked one and was the beneficiary of a four-run second inning. Highlighting that rally were a sacrifice fly by Carter Capozzi and a two-run single by Seth Geiger, who finished with two hits.

Smith retired the side in order in the seventh, two via strikeout.

The win improved the Panthers’ record to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the division.

Hunter Smith had two hits for Ellicottville (2-2, 1-2).

JAMESTOWN FALLS 5-0

WILLIAMSVILLE — Behind a complete game from Ben Quagliana, Williamsville North shut out Jamestown 5-0 in an Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 game.

Quagliana scattered five hits — two by Dom Weber — struck out seven and walked two.

Caleb Piazza pitched the first five innings for the Red & Green, striking out three and walking two. Kyle Falkowski worked the final inning.

Piazza, Blake Smith Jr. and Alex Alvira all added one hit for Jamestown (0-3, 1-5), which is back in action at 11 a.m. Saturday when it entertains Lancaster.

SWANSON THROWS GEM FOR FALCONER

SALAMANCA — Gage Swanson threw a complete game with five strikeouts and gave up four hits to lead Falconer past Salamanca in Division 1 action 3-2.

Anthony Wood led the Golden Falcons’ offense, going 3 for 4, including a two-run triple in the first inning, and Logan Johnson went 2 for 4.

Defensively, Erik Stenstrom made a big diving play at third base for Falconer (3-3, 1-2) that saved extra bases.

Salamanca (6-2, 1-2) also received a strong performance on the mound with Cory Holleran and Jacob Herrick combining for eight strikeouts. Kruz Coustenis hit a double for the Warriors.
