FREWSBURG — Knocking down 3-pointers at the rate Teghan Trocki does can become monotonous.
Almost boring.
So much so that the Frewsburg junior didn’t really know that she was approaching a career milestone until recently.
But when her freshman sister, Jadyn, told her that the team was really going to try and get her the ball more during Monday’s game at Falconer, Teghan knew something was up.
After scoring 29 points, including a school-record nine 3-pointers, in that game, Teghan found out she was only 8 points away from 1,000.

“We were in the car before that game and I had no clue. Jadyn was like, ‘We’re going to try and get you the ball a lot tonight,'” Teghan revealed following Thursday’s game. “I was like, ‘Oh, why? That’s random.’ And she was like, ‘You know you are close?’ I was like, ‘I didn’t really want to know, I wanted to be surprised.’
“She’s not a very good secret keeper,” Teghan added.
The milestone came quickly Thursday night as Teghan made four 3-pointers in the first quarter and finished with eight 3-pointers in the Bears’ 65-51 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 East victory over Portville at Frewsburg Middle/High School.
“I know she was nervous and worried about it. I told her to just play basketball because she is going to get the shots. … She’s a good enough shooter that I wasn’t worried about it happening,” Frewsburg head coach Sierra Beaver said. “We didn’t have to run anything special to get her the ball. Thankfully it happened nice and quick so we got that out of the way.”
Trocki made her first 3-pointer on Frewsburg’s first possession of the game and then nailed back-to-back triples midway through the period, her third coming with 4:39 left in the quarter to give her 1,001 points in her career.

“I’ve been focusing on my fundamentals,” Teghan said. “When I focus on it, I feel a lot better. I feel right now I’m at my peak.”
She added another 3-pointer before the first quarter was over as the Bears (15-2, 7-0) led 22-12.
“Her and her mom stay after every single practice, sometimes after games, and get a ton of shots up before they go home,” Beaver said of Teghan and her mom, Sandy Ruhlman, Brocton’s all-time leading scorer with 1,437 points. “They are here every Saturday and Sunday. She literally takes zero days off and obviously it’s paying off.”
Ava Edwards banked in a 3-pointer for Portville late in the second quarter to keep it a 10-point game, but Taytum Jimerson and Teghan Trocki made back-to-back triples before the half was over as Frewsburg led 39-23 at the break.
“I’ve grown up watching basketball. I’ve seen all my sisters play and I’ve gotten to play with a lot of them too,” said Teghan, whose stepsisters Emma Ruhlman, Gracie Ruhlman and Sammie Ruhlman all played or currently play basketball at Warren (Pa.) Area High School. “This is stuff we imagine in the driveway. It’s fun getting to actually experience it for real, not just pretend in the driveway.”

The Panthers (9-5, 2-4) turned the ball over on their first six possessions of the third quarter as the Bears’ lead ballooned to 20.
Portville actually stayed with Frewsburg in the half-court, thanks to Lilly Bentley’s 24 points, 19 rebounds and three steals, but the Bears’ press led to 30 points off 26 Panthers turnovers.
“Lilly does a great job inside, taking away the paint, taking away drives,” Beaver said. “Their guards do a good job of staying home so when people drive you don’t really get an open kick. … That makes it really tough for us to score in the half-court.”
Trocki became the fifth player in Frewsburg girls history to reach 1,000 points after Beth Luce (Jimerson) — Taytum and Ava’s mother — Shawna Raymond (Alonge), Kaitlyn Blanchard and Gabby Iuculano.
“I knew it would be close, but I wasn’t sure when,” Teghan said about reaching the milestone this season. “I didn’t know if it’d be the end of this season or the beginning of next season. It was never anything I worried about.”
Jadyn Trocki, Taytum Jimerson and Ava Jimerson could all reach the milestone next year.
“As a coach, obviously this is kind of a dream team to coach. We have a lot of scorers. We have a lot of girls who work really hard all the time. They are fun, good kids to coach. I feel super lucky every single day that I get to be a part of it,” Beaver said. ” … If we are able to pull off three or four 1,000-point scorers by next season that’d be a pretty cool thing.”
