FALCONER — The distance from Randolph to Falconer is just under 13 miles. To the Cardinals’ basketball team, however, the gym at Falconer High School felt just like home during Friday night’s Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 East game.
The numbers tell the story.
Of Randolph’s 12 first-half field goals, eight of them were from beyond the arc, including six in the first quarter. Roan Kelly and Kevin McElwain drilled three apiece, while Broden Brooks and Drew Hind each had one.
By the end of the opening period, the Cardinals led 20-6. By halftime, their advantage was 32-10. The Golden Falcons never got closer than 17 the rest of the way as Randolph went on to win 49-27 to raise its record 16-1 overall and 10-0 in the division. Falconer, meanwhile, fell to 8-7 and 4-4.
Judging from the outcome of their first meeting last month — a 47-43 Randolph victory — many in the large crowd likely wondered if another nail-biter was in order.

Apparently, it wasn’t … in the “Cards.”
“We talked about the fact that it was a possibility that would happen,” Golden Falcons’ coach Jordan Goold said of Randolph’s shooting from deep. “I think by No. 3 we were still calm, by No. 4 we lost a little bit and then by No. 5 we lost our confidence and our ability to hang with them.”
The Golden Falcons’ Zach Markham scored the first basket of the game in the first minute and then Randolph began its shooting clinic.
In the span of two minutes, the Cardinals poured in four 3-pointers — two by Kelly and two by McElwain. Mathis Baehr ended the run with a layup to pull Falconer to within 12-4 at the 2:36 mark, but Randolph countered with a Drew Hind drive to the basket and another trey from McElwain. A pair of free throws by Bradyn Fuller pulled the Golden Falcons to within 17-6 with just under a minute remaining in the quarter, but Brooks countered with yet another make from beyond the arc to give Randolph a 20-6 advantage by the end of the period.
Baehr’s floater and a steal that led to a layup to begin the second quarter reduced the deficit to 20-10, but Cardinals went into halftime on an 12-0 run that included a Jaxon Morrison bucket, courtesy of a pass from Drew Hind; another Kelly 3-pointer on a nice pass from Drew Hind; and then Drew Hind scored on a drive, a trey and a lob from Kelly to push their lead to 32-10 at the break.
The second half was played on even terms.
“I just didn’t feel recently that our energy level was at a place I wanted,” Randolph coach Kevin Hind said. “That’s all I’m looking for.”
That energy certainly was noticeable on the defensive end.
“We were awesome,” Coach Hind said. “That’s exactly what we needed to be. Then we hit shots to go on top of it and it was a good night.”
Kelly led Randolph with 17 points, McElwain had 14 and Drew Hind added 11.
For the Golden Falcons, Baehr set the pace with 10.
Despite the loss, Goold was thrilled with the large crowd.
“The atmosphere was awesome,” he said. “It’s really cool to see.”
The Cardinals have a quick turnaround as they will take on rival Salamanca at 12:30 p.m. today in the Centercourt Classic at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute in Buffalo.
“I told them in the (locker room), there are no excuses,” Coach Hind said. ” … You just have to come to play. They’re good and we’re good.”
Falconer is back in action Monday when it travels to Silver Creek.
