FALCONER — Jordan Joslyn has a target on his back in every wrestling tournament he enters.

That’s what comes with the territory of being the defending New York State Public High School Athletic Association champion and Joslyn thrives under the pressure.

“Yeah there is extra pressure, but I kind of like it,” Joslyn said after the Patrick J. Morales Memorial Tournament. “It makes me have to work a little harder.”

Joslyn came in as the top seed of the 138-pound bracket of the 23rd Annual Patrick J. Memorial Wrestling Tournament, an event he had won two straight years coming into this weekend at Falconer Central School. Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Joslyn handled the pressure about as good as anyone could, pinning his way to a first-place matchup against Corry (Pa.)’s Will Allen.

Joslyn was dealt his toughest match of the tournament, but there was very little doubt who would come out on top and it was Joslyn securing his fourth pin of the tournament, this time at 3:39.

“It all happens in the week before,” Joslyn said about his success. “All of the week leading up to it, all that practice.”

While Joslyn wrapped up his high school career at the Morales Tournament with a third straight win, Southwestern sophomore Adrian Torres won the tournament for the first time in his high school career.

Wrestling at 101 pounds, Torres didn’t come in with the pedigree of Joslyn, but as the top seed he was just as dominant on his way to the final against Mason DellaPenta of Eden. Torres recorded pins in all of his matches, except the final when it came down to the final seconds of the third period.

Torres trailed 1-0 after two periods, he was able to secure a point from an escape and then in the waning moments of the third period he managed to take down DellaPenta for the 3-1 win.

“I’m thinking I need to get a takedown, there’s not a lot of time left,” Torres said about the end of the match. “I tried to get close on my shot, got him up in the air and got my two. It feels pretty good to win, last year I got fourth, so it was pretty nice placing at this tournament.”

Torres had the first dramatic finish for the Trojans and just a few matches later, teammate Carmine Calimeri secured first place in the waning moments of his bout at 131 pounds against Clarion (Pa.)’s Logan Powell.

After two periods of a back-and-forth match, Calimeri led by just a point at 7-6. Calimeri started in the down position and it wasn’t until the final minute that he was able to break free, spinning and flipping out of the grasp of Powell. Then instead of backing off, Calimeri quickly pounced on Powell for a takedown to go up 10-6.

However, Powell wasted no time in reversing Calimeri and Southwestern secured it’s second victory thanks to the willpower and strength of Calimeri to not give into Powell in the waning seconds to win 10-8.

While Southwestern was the first local team to have two winners, it was Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer that matched Corry for the most first-place finishes at three.

The Eagles picked up their first victory at 108 pounds as Gavin Burchanowski grinded out a 3-1 decision over Ridgeway (Pa.)’s Michael Copello. Burchanowski earned a takedown in the first period and he was in control from there, adding an escape point in the second and then allowing an escape in the waning moments to win 3-1.

Then with a competitor in three of the final four matches of the evening, Jayden Malecki picked up a dominant win at 190 pounds, pinning Kane (Pa.)’s Ben Walter.

John Watson matched his junior season finish, taking second place as Kane (Pa.)’s Reece Bechakas managed to hold on for a 5-4 decision.

In the final match of the evening, it was Maple Grove’s Matt Trim winning a second straight tournament, securing his fourth pin of this year’s event at 3:52 against Eagles’ Mason Maring at 215 pounds.

While it was a big deal for each tournament winner, it was just a little bit sweeter for Randolph’s Caden Inkley. Coming into the 152-pound final against Jamestown’s Cole Bloomquist, Inkley was at 99 career wins. There’s was a burst from Bloomquist in the second period that put Inkley’s benchmark win in jeopardy, but once he weathered that he was able to work to a 8-4 decision and win No. 100.
