Jamestown Posts Big Win At Lancaster
LANCASTER — The Jamestown boys basketball team was listed as honorable mention in this week’s New York State Sportswriters Association Class AA poll.
After Wednesday night’s road trip, the Red Raiders could make a strong case to move into the top 25.
Sparked by 18 points by senior Bishop Butts and 15 apiece by junior Jaydian Johnson and sophomore Dominic Gonzalez, Jamestown downed Lancaster 64-53 in its Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 opener.
The win improved the Red Raiders to 8-1 overall heading into Saturday’s 1:30 p.m. home against league rival Clarence at McElrath Gymnasium.
The Legends (6-1, 0-1), who were honorable mention in the NYSSWA Class AAA poll, were paced by 6-foot-3 sophomore guard Jordan Alexander with 31 points and Channing Francis with 12.
The Red Raiders, who led 32-31 at halftime, outscored Lancaster 32-22 after the break to secure the road win, and the catalyst was Butts, who scored 14 points in the second half — eight of them from the foul line.
“Lancaster went to extend with some pressure and we were able to go over the top and (Butts) was able to find spots to get those shots (inside),” Jamestown coach Billy Miley said.
The Red Raiders connected on 40% (22 of 55) from the field, including 41% (9 of 22) from the arc, compared to 34% (18 of 53) and 25% (4 of 16) for the Legends. Jamestown also held a 31-19 rebounding advantage.
Elijah Farmer grabbed seven rebounds, and Jack Carlson and Johnson both had six. Johnson also had five steals and three assists; and Butts collected five boards and dished out four assists. Johnson and Gonzalez both connected on three 3-pointers.
NOTES: In the junior varsity game, the Red Raiders improved to 6-1 following a 54-45 win over Lancaster. Jericho Thagard had 18 points to lead Jamestown.
