BESTINE POURS IN 41, REACHES 1,000

WESTFIELD — Each player on the Westfield girls basketball team plays a specific role and Tanleigh Bestine is relied upon to put the ball in the basket.

In Friday night’s Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West game against Maple Grove, the Wolverines needed every single point from Bestine to earn the 53-36 victory.

Bestine poured in 41 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the effort on top of reaching 1,000 career points despite needing 35 to reach the threshold.

“I have not seen a girl do what she did tonight,” Westfield head coach Chris Dole said about Bestine. “Obviously she’s our No. 1 player, there’s a lot of kids that do a lot of things and we rely on her to put the ball in the bucket.”

Bestine is now the fourth girl to score 1,000 points for Westfield, joining Noelle Hunt with 1,012, Sophia DeMarco at 1,100 and Amy Bertrando on top with 1,360.

“She’s putting herself in pretty elite company,” Dole added. “She’s the fourth girl in Westfield to reach 1,000 points I believe. Right now she’s chasing Sophia DeMarco.”

Benefitting from Bestine’s offensive outburst was Sophia Wolfe with five assists and Sydney Hotchkiss, who collected five rebounds for the Wolverines (8-3, 3-1).

Maple Grove (5-3, 2-3) was led by Hayley Johnson picking up a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Rebekka Roberts scored 15 points and Bryanna Cornell hauled in 15 rebounds.
