ELLERY — Chris Vacanti did a little bit of everything Friday night.

That included shooting from the arc.

Controlling the boards.

And protecting the rim.

All told, the senior nailed four 3-pointers, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked five shots to lead Westfield, the No. 2-ranked Class C team in the state, to a 58-47 victory over No. 25 Maple Grove in a Division 2 West game on Dutch Hollow Road.

The win raised the Wolverines’ record to 12-1 overall and 6-0 in the division, while the Red Dragons fell to 8-3 and 4-2.

“I rode these guys pretty hard today, especially the big guys,” Westfield coach Nolan Swanson said. “Man, they played hard. We go through stretches where it doesn’t look so pretty, but we had some really good stretches in the game today.”

The Wolverines started fast in each half, thanks to their success from distance. In fact, in the first three minutes of the game, Vacanti and Carson Swanson each nailed a pair of 3-pointers to help Westfield open a 14-2 lead. By the end of the first period, the Wolverines held a 21-12 advantage.

Westfield never trailed after that.

But Maple Grove never quit.

By halftime, the hosts cut the deficit to 31-26 and were still in the game, but the Wolverines opened the third quarter just like the first eight minutes as Vacanti, Carson Swanson and Zach Maguire all hit treys to spark a 13-2 run.

Heading into the final period with a 47-35 lead, Westfield was in control, although the Red Dragons drew within 47-40 with about 6 1/2 minutes remaining. But a putback by Maguire and a pair of buckets by Carson Swanson pushed the lead to 53-40 and the Wolverines closed the game out without any difficulty.

“My guys have serious size out there and some ability, with speed in certain places,” Coach Swanson said. “We did hold them down pretty good in the second half.”

Carson Swanson led all scorers with 23 points to go along with eight assists, five rebounds, four steals and two blocks; Maguire finished with 13 points and seven boards; and Aaron Fuller was a difference maker inside with 15 rebounds.

Leading the way for Maple Grove were Jack Mansfield with 12 points, Jonah Foley with 11 and Marcus Laney with 10. Laney also grabbed 11 rebounds, while Gavin Rodgers and Sean Verbosky both had three steals.

Red Dragons coach Graham Soffel was pleased with the effort of his players, especially defensively, but their spotty shooting came back to bite them.

“Overall, I’m proud of how they played, the intensity was there,” he said. “I think we started a little sluggish, but at the same time (Westfield) hit some big shots. Overall, I love the effort, but unfortunately it was one of those nights where the ball wasn’t going in the basket as much as we hoped.”

The Wolverines return to action Monday when they entertain Panama. Maple Grove hosts Clymer.

“I think the guys are excited about (the season),” said Soffel, who is in his first season at the helm of the Red Dragons. “They’re having a lot of fun playing. Their confidence is definitely starting to build, which is huge.”
