Section VI Semifinals Get Underway Tonight

Six local football teams will be fighting for their playoff lives this weekend.

Four local programs will be playing in Section VI semifinals tonight while the other two will play each other Saturday afternoon.

In Lancaster at 7 tonight, Class AA No. 3 Jamestown will visit the second-seeded Legends. During Week 6 of the regular season, Lancaster got the better of the Red Raiders 41-21 at Strider Field.

In that game, Legends quarterback Alex Krupa completed six passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns, while Chris Gill ran 19 times for 110 yards and three scores. Lancaster led 20-7 at halftime before a 21-0 third quarter put the game away.

Cole Bloomquist led Jamestown with 18 carries for 130 yards and a score, Nate Sanchez ran for a touchdown and Jack Carlson threw a touchdown to Carson Panebianco that night.

Lancaster is coming off a 40-0 shutout of No. 7 Hutch Tech in the quarterfinals, while the Red Raiders beat No. 6 Niagara Falls 48-32 last week.

The winner of tonight’s game will take on the winner of No. 1 Bennett and No. 4 Orchard Park in next Friday’s 7:30 p.m. championship game at Highmark Stadium.

Also at 7 tonight, Class C South No. 1 Salamanca will host Class C South No. 3 Portville/Cuba-Rushford in a Class C semifinal at Veterans Memorial Park. During Week 8 of the regular season, the Warriors beat the Panthers 8-7 in Portville to clinch the division’s top seed.

As the score would indicate, neither team did a lot offensively that night. Zach Trietley ran for Salamanca’s touchdown, while Kaedon Holcomb ran for 82 yards and a score for Portville/Cuba-Rushford.

The Warriors are coming off a 42-20 defeat of Class C North No. 4 Cleveland Hill last week, while the Panthers beat Class C North No. 2 Newfane 48-47 in overtime last Friday night.

Also in Class C semifinal action at 7 tonight, Class C South No. 2 Southwestern will travel to Class C North No. 1 Medina. The teams did not meet during the regular season.

The Trojans beat Class C North No. 3 Akron 20-13 at Charles A. Lawson Field last Friday, while the Mustangs beat Class C South No. 4 Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove 24-0.

The winners of tonight’s semifinals will play for the title at 1 p.m. next Friday at Highmark Stadium.

In Class D, No. 2 Franklinville/Ellicottville will host No. 3 Wilson in the first playoff game for each after they received quarterfinal byes. During Week 4 of the regular season, the Titans beat the Lakemen 41-20 in Ellicottville.

That night, Franklinville/Ellicottville’s Hunter Smith ran 10 times for 203 yards and four touchdowns, while teammate Billy Slavinski added 72 yards and a score. Conner Ernest threw for 167 yards and John Mahar ran for 124 yards, but the Titans led 41-7 before Wilson scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

The final local semifinal will take place Saturday when No. 1 Clymer/Sherman/Panama hosts No. 4 Randolph at 1:30 p.m. in Clymer. During Week 2 of the regular season, the Wolfpack beat the Cardinals 21-6 at Raymond Van Wie Field in Randolph.

Clymer/Sherman/Panama quarterback Tate Catanese threw for 96 yards and a score, and also ran for 102 yards and a touchdown. Bryce Posker added 94 yards and a score that night. Tristan Farnham scored the only touchdown for Randolph.

The Cardinals beat Gowanda/Pine Valley 56-35 last Friday night at home to advance.

The winners of the Class D semifinals will play for a title at 5 p.m. next Thursday at Highmark Stadium to kick off five championship games over two days.
