DUNKIRK — Amanda Dilts.

Two names forever etched in the lore of Frewsburg girls soccer.

Nearly four years after Dilts sent the Bears into the third New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C Far West Regional in program history with a 10th-round penalty kick, Caflisch scored in the fifth round Saturday at Dunkirk High School’s Karl Hoeppner Field to send Frewsburg to its sixth regional.

“I was super nervous, but I just wanted to go home with a sectional championship. That was my thought process,” Caflisch said. “As soon as I saw it go in, I was so happy.”

“It’s a special, special moment,” Frewsburg head coach Scott Stone added. “You only get so many games like this if you’re lucky in your career. I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of five of them.”

The shootout was the exclamation point on a physical game between the second-seeded Bears and No. 1 Wilson that saw neither team give an inch.

The teams were locked in a scoreless tie after 40 minutes and were tied 1-1 after 80 minutes before 30 minutes of overtime still didn’t decide a winner. At that point, the teams were crowned Section VI Class C co-champions — the Bears for the seventh time and fifth in succession, and the Lakewomen for the third time and first since 2015.

Then came the shootout to decide which team would represent the Buffalo area at next weekend’s Far West Regional against Section V’s champion.

Wilson eighth-grader Addison Elia shot high to kick off the shootout before Frewsburg senior Addison Hultberg drilled her try into the corner of the goal.

“Every practice, at the end of practice, we would go through everybody about three times before we would stop,” Hultberg said. “We knew that they were important and we practiced them so much.”

Bears eighth-grade keeper Elysse Gruber, who didn’t enter the game until the shootout, then stopped an attempt from Lakewomen senior Rian Faery and Frewsburg junior Taytum Jimerson gave the Bears a commanding 2-0 lead.

“Elysse is a little longer, she’s great in the shootouts,” Stone said while also complimenting senior keeper Braelyn Stelmack. ” … (Elysse) was a little nervous, but we had confidence in her.”

Wilson senior Lily Avery got her team on the board in the third round and Lakewomen freshman keeper Brooke Urban stopped Frewsburg senior Gracie Conlan to make things interesting.

Wilson senior Peyton McInnis then briefly tied the shootout before Urban appeared to make her second save on Bears junior Kaylee Cappa. But an official on the end line determined that Urban left her line early and Cappa scored on her second attempt to put Frewsburg back in front.

“We knew exactly what we wanted to do,” Stone said. “Most of them have a spot that they like, but if the goalie cheats a certain way, they’ll do what they have to do.”

Lakewomen senior Leia Cloy scored to make it 3-3 on the first try of the fifth round, but Caflisch — who won Tuesday’s semifinal with an overtime goal — made no mistake with her try and sent the Bears on to next Saturday’s 5 p.m. regional at Caledonia-Mumford High School.

“I knew she was going to do it. We practiced so much,” Hultberg said. “I’ve seen her hit it. All of her goals go right in.”

“The kid just doesn’t quit. She has so much fight in her,” Stone added of Caflisch. ” … She wanted it again today and willed us to victory.”

Frewsburg, which beat Wilson in each of the past two sectional finals in Dunkirk, struck first Saturday.

The teams played a scoreless first half that likely wouldn’t have stayed that way if not for Conlan. Elia scored 28 goals for Wilson prior to Saturday and several times in the opening 40 minutes had dangerous chances turned away by Conlan and Hultberg on the back line of the Bears defense.

“We have the best defense in this league year-in and year-out. Gracie and Addison stepped up today,” Stone said. “Gracie had a tall task today because (Addison Elia) is a heck of a player. Gracie stood up to the challenge. … When we have two center backs like that, we like our chances no matter who we play.”

After halftime, Frewsburg found an opportunity when freshman Audrey Eckwahl was taken down in the 44th minute. Hultberg lined up over the ball from 25 yards out and scored into the top of the goal for a 1-0 lead.

“Before this game, I had so much confidence,” Hultberg said. “There was not one moment where I thought we were going to crumble.”

“We started out a little flat,” Caflisch added. “Getting that goal helped us a lot.”

The Lakewomen waited for an opportunity of their own and it came in the 61st minute when they were awarded a free kick after a foul on the Bears. Junior McKenzie Elia lined up near midfield and sent a ball into the 18-yard box that was corralled by Addison Elia and left-footed into the goal to tie the game at 1-1.

Wilson continued to apply most of the pressure over the final 20 minutes and Frewsburg was fortunate to get out of regulation tied.

In the first 15-minute overtime, Cloy cleared a Bears corner kick off the goal line early and Urban made a game-saving save on a try from Taytum Jimerson in the final 10 seconds that then glanced off the crossbar and landed near Ava Jimerson, who was also turned away by Urban.

Hultberg missed on a free kick and Taytum Jimerson just missed over the far post on a try with over five minutes remaining in the second 15-minute overtime to ultimately send the teams to the shootout.

“It was just a grind of a game. I told this team at the end of the regular season that they were very similar to our (2019) championship team,” Stone said. ” … The fight that this team has is unparalleled.”

Now Frewsburg will look to get to the second state semifinal in school history and first since 2009. The Bears will take on either Holley or Byron-Bergen next weekend. Byron-Bergen has ended Frewsburg’s season the past two years.

“Bring them on. It’s time to get over the hump with this team,” Stone said. “We’ll gladly go up there and see Byron-Bergen for the third time.”
