Jayhawks Take Fourth Place

CHAUTAUQUA — Sandhills Community College left Chautauqua Golf Club on Friday with plenty of first-place hardware, along with a few impressive team and individual records.

Jamestown CC departed its home course with plenty for which to be proud.

The Flyers, hailing from Pinehurst, North Carolina, claimed their third straight NJCAA Division III National Championship with a tournament record 1,147, which eclipsed the old mark of 1,168 set by Monroe CC in 2006. Georgia Military College was the runner-up, shooting a 1,188, the College of DuPage claimed third place with 1,252 and the host Jayhawks were fourth with 1,264.

Anthony Gullo (Jamestown/Jamestown High School) led Jamestown CC on Friday with a 75 for a 311 tournament total to finish tied for 21st place; Austyn Cummings (Warren, Pennsylvania/Warren Area HS) carded a 76 for one of his best rounds of the season.

Brady Fye (Lakewood/Southwestern HS) recorded his third 77 of the week for a 310 total, which tied for 19th; Noah Adams (Mayville/Chautauqua Lake HS) shot an 81 for his best round of the week; and Traden Gray (Frewsburg/Frewsburg HS) also had an 81 for a 311 total, which tied him with Gullo for 21st place.

The tournament medalist was Ben Read of Sandhills CC, who fired an 11-under par 277, breaking the previous tournament mark of 281 set in 2009. Read’s teammate, Alex Martin, finished with a 286 and Nick Johnson of Georgia Military College was third with a 288. Logan Hay of Sandhills CC and Troy Loughry of Butler County CC rounded out the top five with scores of 293 and 294, respectively.

Sandhills CC head coach Gus Ulrich was named the Men’s Golf Coach of the Tournament, while Liam Kosior of Butler County CC was selected the Men’s Golf Sportsmanship Award winner.

On the women’s side, Oxford College of Emory University was the first-ever NJCAA Division III Women’s Golf national champion, posting a score of 1,546. RCSJ-Gloucester was runner-up with a 1,685.

Individually, Sandhills CC held on to the top three spots. Trinity Ahining was medalist with a 300 while teammates Ava Ray and Scotty Foley recorded totals of 304 and 311, respectively.

Alla Soydara of Minnesota State Community and Technical College earned a fourth-place finish with a 322. Rayne Yelinko of County College of Morris finished with a 345 to round out the top five.

Martin Maher of Oxford College of Emory University was named the Women’s Golf Coach of the Tournament, while McCarthy Lang of Niagara County CC was named the Women’s Golf Sportsmanship Award winner.
