Fredonia Prevails In Back-And-Forth Game At Jamestown
Owen Rush hit an RBI double and Matt Cowan added an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning as Fredonia rallied for a 10-8 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 baseball win over Jamestown on Thursday at the Martin Road Athletic Complex.
The Hillbillies (8-7, 7-4) led 4-0 after two innings. Ashton Putney hit an RBI groundout in the first inning before Collin Crowell, Micah Davis and Putney had RBI singles in the second inning.
The Red Raiders (4-8, 4-7) answered in the bottom of the third inning when Carter Rizzuto hit a two-out, three-run double to make it 4-3.
Fredonia made it 6-3 in the top of the fourth inning. Putney had another RBI single and Matt Cowan plated a run with a squeeze bunt.
Jamestown took the lead with a five-run fifth inning, sending 10 batters to the plate thanks to four errors and a walk. Caleb Piazza doubled while Sean O’Brien, Rizzuto, Brandon Lobb and Dominic Weber drove in runs for the Red Raiders.
The Hillbillies tied the game in the sixth on Nathan Sercu’s two-run double down the right-field line before taking the lead in the seventh.
Jamestown had a runner reach with a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh inning, but left him stranded.
Matt Cash struck out four and walked three on the mound for Fredonia while Piazza and Owen Glover combined to strike out one for the Red Raiders.
Davis had three hits and scored three times; Putney had three hits and drove in three runs; Rush had two hits, including the double, and scored twice; and Matt Cowan and Sercu each drove in two runs.
Piazza had two doubles and two runs scored; Rizzuto had two hits, including a double, and four RBIs; and Weber had two hits and an RBI.
JACKSON HAS BIG DAY
FALCONER — Donny Jackson went 3 for 3 with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored to lead Dunkirk past Falconer 18-2 in five innings of Division 1 action.
Greg Orcutt was 3 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored; Jonathan Ganey was 2 for 3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored; Brady Corbett was 2 for 4 with three runs scored; Tyler Karin drove in three runs; and Paul Trippy and Dylan Bankoski both drove in two runs for the Marauders (10-3, 8-2).
Bankoski, Anthony Cosme and Thomas Shaffer combined on a three-hitter with nine strikeouts on the mound.
Brodie Little had two hits for the Golden Falcons (0-16, 0-11).
TROJANS WIN WILD ONE
ST. BONAVENTURE — Southwestern scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 14-14 tie and beat Olean 17-14 in Division 1 action at St. Bonaventure University’s Handler Park at McGraw-Jennings Field.
Brody Larson walked and stole second before Dustin Hendrix’s RBI triple with one out in the seventh. Hendrix then scored on a passed ball and Jameson Walsh walked ahead of Pete Conley’s RBI triple.
Judd Harris retired the Huskies (4-9, 3-7) in order in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win.
Olean led 11-2 early before the Trojans (7-6, 6-5) tied the game with a nine-run fourth inning. Southwestern then took 13-11 and 14-12 leads before the Huskies tied it in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Hendrix finished 4 for 6 with two doubles, the triple, two RBIs and three runs scored; Lucas Gilbert had two hits, including a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored; and Chase Kartesz had two hits, two RBIs and a runs scored. Larson also scored three runs and drove in two.
Cal Vogtli was 4 for 5 with two doubles, two triples, three RBIs and two runs scored; Thomas Bates had two triples, three RBIs and two runs scored; Austin Miles had two hits, including a double, and five runs scored; Lucas Brushingham had two hits, including a double; and Aaron Vincent and Ryan Isenberg each had two hits for Olean.
ROTH NO-HITS WESTFIELD
WESTFIELD — Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s Gabe Roth threw a five-inning no-hitter with 12 strikeouts as the Wolfpack beat Westfield 13-0 in Division 2 action.
Austin White led Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s offense with a 2-for-4 day that included a home run and two runs scored. Dylan Michael added two hits, including a double, three RBIs and two runs scored; Blake Kopta doubled; Tate Catanese drove in two runs and scored twice; and Bryce Hinsdale also drove in two runs for the Wolfpack (10-3, 9-2).
Chris Vacanti, Danny Bratton and Trent Ramm combined for five strikeouts on the mound for the Wolverines (3-7, 2-7).
PANTHERS RALLY PAST BULLDOGS
BROCTON — Pine Valley scored two runs in the top of the seventh to rally past Brocton for a 4-3 Division 2 victory.
Jaiden Miller hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Craig Howard to tie the game at 3-3. Then, Pine Valley swiped another run when George Kruszka came home on a passed ball to make it 4-3.
The Panthers (5-8, 3-7) closed out the game with Nick Seabolt finishing with two strikeouts while allowing two walks and a hit in his two innings of work. Prior to Seabolt, Trent Ivett threw the first five innings, striking out eight, walking six and giving up three earned runs on five hits.
Leading the Panthers offense was Kruszka with two hits, Kyle Chase doubled and Miller had an RBI.
Brocton’s effort was led by Aiden Gatto going 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs while also scoring a run himself.
Brocton (6-6, 4-6) started with Grant Gustafson on the mound. He went six innings, struck out six, walked four, gave up three hits and allowed two earned runs. Gatto finished the game with one strikeout in the seventh.
PORTVILLE TOPS BLACK KNIGHTS
SILVER CREEK — Luke Petryszak struck out 15 and gave up three hits to lead Portville past Silver Creek/Forestville 10-0 in Division 3.
Portville (10-1, 10-1) was led by Michael Cole, who went 3 for 5 with a double and three RBIs, and Ethan Obergfell, who went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.
Silver Creek/Forestville (9-7, 7-5) went with Aiden Piccolo on the mound to start the game.
T’BIRDS POWER PAST COUGARS
MAYVILLE — Chautauqua Lake rolled past Cassadaga Valley 11-1 in five innings of Division 2 action.
Devin Hewes started and Nate Henry finished the game for Chautauqua Lake with seven strikeouts, a walk and three hits against over four innings of work.
Chautauqua Lake (5-8, 5-5) received plenty of offense from its pitchers with Henry going 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs; Hewes was 2 for 3 with three RBIs; Lawson Ormsby was 2 for 2 with a walk, a sacrifice bunt and two RBIs; and Brad Smith was 3 for 3.
Cassadaga Valley (4-10, 2-9) was led by Braden LeBaron pitching all four innings with seven strikeouts and a walk. Calvin Hilliker finished 2 for 3 with a RBI for the Cougars.
ROSS HITS HR FOR WARRIORS
ELLICOTTVILLE — Jaxson Ross went 2 for 2 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored to power Salamanca past Ellicottville 15-2 in five innings of Division 3 action.
Kruz Coustenis went 2 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs scored; Cory Holleran was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored; and Jason McGraw doubled for the Warriors (11-4, 10-2).
Cole Urbanski and Zaron Tucker combined on a five-hitter with six strikeouts for Salamanca.
Owen Chudy doubled while Hunter Smith, Gian Nuzzo, Emmett Jacobson-Coolidge and Christian Swalcy singled for the Eagles (5-9, 4-7).
