Etzel victorious in Travel League return
BUSTI — Al Etzel of Ocala, Florida, was victorious in his return to the Wednesday Travel League, shooting the low round of 78 at South Hills Country Club.
Ed Tofil, Josh Hilliker and Jeff Nelson all tied for second place with 80s. Etzel led the front nine with 39 while Etzel, Hilliker and Nelson all shot 39s to lead the back nine.
Tom Sacilowski and Dennis Gawronski Sr. won the B and C Flights, respectively. Gawronski now owns 25 career C Flight wins, tied for fourth most all-time. Ron Szach was the low senior. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Pat Weaver.
A longtime Dunkirk resident, Etzel returned to earn his 62nd career tour victory, fourth most all-time. During his illustrious Travel League career, Etzel has two major victories, as well as six B Flight wins and one Commissioner’s Award. He still ranks seventh on both the all-time points list and in scoring average. He also ranks in the top five in nearly every other statistical category. Etzel is also the only golfer in league history to win closest to the pin on all four par-3 holes in the same event.
Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Tofil (Nos. 4 and 17), Etzel (Nos. 5 and 10), Hilliker (Nos. 8 and 12), Adam Gornikiewicz (No. 11) and Joe Michalski (No. 15); B Flight — Dave Wallace (Nos. 1 and 17), Sacilowski (No. 7), Bill Emery (Nos. 8 and 14), Gary Haase (No. 11) and Szach (No. 12); and C Flight — Tim Walawender (Nos. 4 and 8) and Mike Willoughby (Nos. 11 and 13).
Closest to the pin were: John Waterman (No. 4), Wallace (No. 9), Hilliker (No. 13) and Dave Franklin (No. 15). Winners of the Steeplechase were: Nelson (A Flight), Phil Hopkins (B) and Gawronski (C).
Top point winners were: Tofil (29), Willoughby (26), Hilliker (25), and Michalski and Wallace (22 apiece). Season points leaders (through 7 events): 1. Hilliker (233), 2. Sacilowski (140), 3. This week the league plays Beechwood Golf Course in Fairview, Pennsylvania. The first tee time is at 10 a.m. There are several openings at this time. Golfers are asked to be signed up by noon Monday.
