Dunkirk Earns Split With Southwestern
DUNKIRK — Dunkirk broke open a 5-5 tie after two innings with a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to beat Southwestern 10-5 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 baseball Thursday at Dunkirk High School.
“We’re excited about this win,” said Dunkirk head coach Frank Jagoda, whose Marauders lost to Southwestern 6-3 on Wednesday. “After yesterday, we played one bad inning. We thought if we came in today and saw some different pitching, we’d hit the ball — and we did.”
Tyler Karin threw a complete game for the Marauders (3-1, 3-1), striking out six and walking none. He shut the Trojans (2-2, 2-2) out over the final five innings, including retiring seven in a row from the end of the third inning through the fifth inning.
“He got off to a shaky start with five runs in the first two innings, then he shut the door,” Jagoda said. “He found his spots, kept the ball down low and kept them off stride with a breaking ball.”
Brady Corbett went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs; Karin had two hits and a stolen base; Greg Orcutt drove in two runs; and Jonathan Ganey had a pinch-hit double for Dunkirk.
“We challenge the bottom to be as good or better than the top of the lineup,” Jagoda said. “John Ganey doubled and really sparked our team in the bottom of the fourth inning. John’s a good boy and the kids really get behind him. He hit one to right-center and got on second to make things happen.”
Dustin Hendrix went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI; Jameson Walsh and Chase Kartesz doubled and drove in a run; and Lucas Gilbert had two hits, including a double, and an RBI for Southwestern.
“This was a huge win for a lot of young kids today,” Jagoda added. “We’re just very happy with what’s going on.”
BLACK KNIGHTS BLANK CARDS
SILVER CREEK — Max Vigue gave up just two hits, struck out seven and walked two as he went the distance in Silver Creek/Forestville’s 19-0 Division 3 victory over Randolph.
Vigue was given plenty of run support from Silver Creek/Forestville (4-3, 3-1) teammates Caleb Fiegl going 3 for 3 with a triple and four RBIs, Cam Sakpal went 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI, and Joe Villafranca also went 2 for 4 with a triple.
The losing pitcher for Randolph (0-5, 0-3) was Tristen Farnham.
HILLBILLIES COME UP SHORT
FREDONIA — Fredonia found itself very quickly in a 6-0 hole against visiting Allegany-Limestone.
The Hillbillies fought to get back in the game, cutting the deficit to one, but ultimately came up short 7-5 in Division 1 action.
After already scoring four runs in the top of the first, the Gators (2-4, 1-3) tacked on two more in the second thanks to a Fredonia error in the outfield with two fielders colliding.
Fredonia (2-2, 2-2) got its first run back in the bottom half of the inning as Nathan Sercu doubled and was knocked home by Collin Crowell to make it 6-1. Another run was added in the bottom of the fifth after leadoff singles by Micah Davis and Matt Cowan were capitalized on with an RBI fielder’s choice from Ashton Putney.
The Hillbillies made it even closer in the following inning when Davis stroked a two-run double that brought Andrew Cowan and Brady Helmer home to make it 6-4. Davis was then knocked home by an RBI single from Matt Cowan.
Cutting the lead to 6-5 was as close as Fredonia would get as the Gators tacked on a final run in the top of the seventh and the Hillbillies baserunners were stranded in the bottom half. Allegany-Limestone was led by AJ Riordan with two hits and three RBIs, and Caleb Strade had two hits and an RBI.
The Gators’ winning pitcher was Evan Johnson, going 5ª innings with five strikeouts.
Sercu started the game for Fredonia and struck out one in two innings of work, before Putney took over for the remainder of the game and struck out five and walked four.
BROCTON COMES FROM BEHIND
SOUTH DAYTON — Scoring seven runs over the final three innings lifted Brocton to a 9-5 victory over Pine Valley in a Division 2 game.
The Bulldogs (4-1, 2-1), trailing 5-2 after four frames, scored four times in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good. Highlighting the rally was a two-run double by Grant Gustafson, who finished the day with three hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs.
Damion Franklin and Aiden Gatto (double) both collected two hits. Gatto scored three runs.
Jaiden Miller paced the Panthers (2-3, 0-3) with two hits and an RBI; and George Kruszka added a double, a triple and drove in two runs.
